Media trust hits another historic low

The percentage of Americans who say they have a great deal or a fair amount of trust in the mass media has fallen to a record low, according to a new Gallup survey.
Why it matters: Media trust had started to rebound following the 2016 election, but those gains have been wiped out amid growing political partisanship.
The big picture: Media is now the least-trusted civic and political institution surveyed by Gallup.
More Americans say they have a great deal or fair amount of trust in Congress, the Supreme Court, local and state governments, and the executive branch than in the media.
By the numbers: As of this year, only 31% of Americans say they have a great deal or a fair amount of trust in the mass media, down from 32% last year, which tied the record low set in 2016.
At the same time, the percentage of Americans who say they have "not very much" trust in the media has risen from 27% in 2020 to 33% in 2024. Prior to 2004, more than half of the American population consistently said they trusted the media.

The media have made this election into a badly-scripted "reality show", where they have legitimized a convicted criminal and his loony cohorts, fully expecting him to win the highest office in the land thanks to their help, while they tried to, and continue to destroy a sitting President who has implemented more initiatives and beneficial programs for ALL Americans than FDR - and all in a single term.

(17,841 posts)...a poll conducted by (untrustworthy, rightwing) gallup, telling us through (untrustworthy, rightwing) axios that the media in general is not trusted by a bipartisan majority when we know that rightwingers believe rightwing media more than they believe their own minds.

(1,290 posts)I remember a younger self, watching the news on TV, reading the local newspaper (and even the New York Times.)
But..Whoa!. Now the public is being swamped by strange sources.."Facebook Reels >> "The world is flat" We never went to the moon"
"Kamala Harris is a spy" (WTF??) ..and then Fox Snews, X, TicToc, and more trash and lies that most people do NOT
want to hear or worse LOVE to hear.
I have no answers, just questions.

(286 posts)As I see it the MSM has done exactly that for the republicans since I can remember. For at least 50 years the media has favored the right and done everything they can to discredit and lie about any idea that isn't RW and now maga lies have taken over.
I don't get my news from these liars.

(286 posts)The BBC, Al Jazeera, The Guardian, The Telegraph, Der Spiegel, English Le Monde, New Zealand Herald, Glasgow Tribune, and many more that I find while paying attention. For local I rely on print media in my location that is not part of the daily cavalcade of lies, and then there is this site and Meidas Touch and all of the Pro Democracy channels on You Tube. If there were to be a natural disaster I would then tune in to the local media for updates on safety or evacuation messages, however we know that maga lies can be overshadowing truth. Also for local news about city projects, failed promises or recalls and corruption or achievments there are always local sources of information. Going to a city council meeting is a good way to connect with local issues and start to understand what going on in your city. Listening to your local electeds discuss their positions and policies can give you an idea of what their goals may really be.

(142,102 posts)I run into their stuff when it comes up in searches alongside the "Washington Examiner" and "New York Post". Much of what they write just parrots the RW drivel here. I suppose since the Tories are out in the UK, they have bigger fish to fry in the home country now.
If anything, the "other side" as a Center-Right is Reuters, which is also a UK publication.

Is laughable. Journalism has become a pillar of capitalism. It is a failure at service to the electorate.
It would be nice if journalists were required to study and demonstrate proficient understanding of the dangerous tools of political debate, dis/misinformation and propagandan as prerequisites for initial and continuing employment.
It wouldn't hurt to have them swear an oath to democracy like the Hippocratic oath and the oath of those serving our government and the military.
Required continuing education on deception detection and deception management would also be a good start.
Journalism should be a guardian of the highest possible moral standards for protecting the Republic. Not a mechanism for its dismantling.
