Newsom calls special session to fund California’s legal defense against Trump

-- Gov. Gavin Newsom is asking California lawmakers to increase state funding for litigation against the incoming Trump administration.

-- California anticipates that Trump could seek to limit access to abortion, dismantle environmental protections and withhold federal disaster response funding.

-- The new special session provides an early look at the governor’s plan to wage an aggressive and highly visible campaign to shield California from the Trump White House.

Launching his first salvo less than 36 hours after former President Trump was again elected to the White House, Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday convened a special session of the state Legislature to increase legal funding to defend civil rights, climate change, access to abortion, disaster funding and other California policies from a conservative federal agenda before the inauguration in January.

Newsom’s preemptive strike signals the return of the hostile relationship between Democratic-controlled California and the Trump administration that was a hallmark of the Republican’s first term.

“The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack — and we won’t sit idle,” Newsom said in a statement. “California has faced this challenge before, and we know how to respond. We are prepared to fight in the courts, and we will do everything necessary to ensure Californians have the support and resources they need to thrive.”

As I recall, he did the same after his 2018 election.

I’m sure that the majority us living in the California Republic are serious about not becoming fascists.

The Orange Menace receives as little play here as we can afford. And, with some sacrifice, we have the resources to operate a national style economy here if he cuts us off.

California is the best place to be right now. Yes, the monster may hate us, but we are a stronghold against him. Here, there remains a blue wall between us and the evil in DC. I know I am safer here than I would be anywhere else I've lived in my life. I may be disgusted with my country, but I am very glad to be a Californian.

from Chicago when I was 22. The day I crossed the border I knew I would never leave. And I never will.

I think California, Oregon, and Washington should work together to make plans for mutual disaster aid, though. We have to be ready to forget the federal government even exists.
