Florida Town Votes to Remove Fluoride from Water, Citing Trumps Appointment of RFK Jr as H-Something-Something Director
Sarah Rumpf Nov 15th, 2024, 5:13 pm
The city commission in Winter Haven, Florida voted this week to stop adding fluoride to the drinking water, citing President-elect Donald Trumps nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to be the Secretary of H-something-something as one of the reasons.
On Thursday, the former-and-future president announced his intention to nominate Kennedy as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, a controversial decision due to Kennedys long history of promoting conspiracy theories and misinformation about vaccines and other health topics, including water fluoridation.
According to a report by local NBC affiliate WFLA, the Winter Haven commissioners voted 3-2 to remove the fluoride by January 1, or on a date as soon as reasonably practical thereafter,' at a commission meeting that included a lengthy public comment period where residents shared health concerns.
For many commission members and audience members, the issue at hand was government overreach, WFLA reported.
Commissioner Brad Dantzler, who was one of the three votes to remove the fluoride, cited concerns posed by 2024 Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. something that was mentioned by [m]ultiple residents during the public comment period. At the time of the commission meeting, Trump had not yet publicly announced his nomination of Kennedy.....................

There is enough nicotine in one cigarette that, if processed out and injected, would kill
someone immediately. Saying that fluoride levels thousands of time higher than why you can get from drinking water are dangerous is irrelevant to the conversation.

(23,048 posts)If confirmed, adjust the amount of fluoride appropriately.
Don't just eliminate it completely because Mr. Brainworm says to.
There are many of absolutely essential trace minerals that are toxic in high doses. Iodides can be toxic, but adding them to common table salt has eliminated goiter completely.

(37,366 posts)... but a lot is not better -- as is true of so many things. Vitamins are essential for good health, but some, such as vitamin A, can be toxic if taken in excess. Drinking too much water too quickly can kill you.
INFORMED and INTELLIGENT limits are the answer. Eliminating fluoride completely leads to weaker teeth. Too much fluoride leads to mottled teeth. Living downwind from an aluminum smelter (which releases volatile fluorides into the air) has been known to be extremely unhealthy for cattle, who browse on grass contaminated with fluoride. So the amount of fluoride needs to be carefully monitored and controlled. Fortunately, naturally fluoride in water is rare ( but led to the discovery of its beneficial effects) so overdosing is rare. 0.7 ppm in water is adequate to protect dental health in growing children. Toxic effects begin at much higher doses, which are not difficult at all to avoid.
To people like RFKJ, these facts don't matter. They seem to think that any fluoride content is bad, regardless of the evidence accumulated in dozens, if not hundreds, of studies. It's truly knee-jerk rejection as soon as they hear the word 'fluoride'. This same pattern underlies much of right-wing "thinking", which is why all you have to do is slap a label they've been brainwashed to find objectionable onto something/someone, and they immediately hate it, without knowing anything more about it.
Either you understand the words INFORMED and INTELLIGENT, or you don't. MAGAts make it clear they have no remotely accurate conception of either.

(5,832 posts)Monitor dental services for 10 years or so to see if there is any increase in the number of cavities overall. I, personally, believe there is enough fluoride in the toothpaste we use without the need for adding it to the water. I grew up in a town that used fluoride and had plenty of cavities. I've lived in an unfluoridated city for the last 22 years and have had none. The only difference between the two was I became more diligent in brushing and flossing as I got older.

Dantzler said, in response to correspondence with dental professionals, that city commissioners acknowledge that fluoride is beneficial for dental health, but they have concerns about what may happen when it gets in the gut.
...
As pointed out by Dantzler and some public commenters, the discussion echoed those during meetings in the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is reminiscent of what happened with COVID, Dantzler said. All four of us, with exception of Commissioner Dollison, were here during COVID and asked to make medical decisions on things that were very complicated, and we dont completely understand.

So rather than listening to the medical professionals, this bag of pus listens to the lawyer who was a heroin addict, is now abusing steroids, and drove his car with a chainsawed whale head leaking body fluids into the faces of his children. What an abject toady.

(3,167 posts)My first born was born with fluorosis which mottled her teeth and possibly affected her bones and joints. I learned about the dangers of fluoridated water as a result. I suspect none of the people commenting actually know anything about the risks of drinking fluoridated water. People just get on a bandwagon that hurts those of us who have actually researched it and understand the problem.
There are two wealthy cities near me (over a million average home price) who have taken fluoride out of their water supply while our upper middle class city continues to add it. I blame people who jump on popular positions without investing any real effort.
Research is hard sometimes. It's more than doing a google search and believing what others who are pushing the same low-effort positions say. Yeah, I get it. It's comforting to think you know something and everyone else is just a conspiracy theorist.

No, we don't brush with fluoridated toothpaste. No need.

I agree, research is hard sometimes. But when 9 out of 10 scientific research articles say "keep fluoride in the water because the benefits outweigh the problems", and you don't believe it, you have failed at researching.
