NORMAN, Okla. -- David Boren, former Oklahoma governor, U.S. senator and University of Oklahoma president, died on Thursday at his home in Norman. He was 83. ... Boren's family released a statement saying he was surrounded by his family when he died early Thursday morning.
"He committed his life in service of others and now is resting peacefully in the arms of God. Well done good and faithful servant," Boren's family said in the statement. ... A memorial service will be determined at a later date. The family asks that people consider donating to the David L. Boren scholarship fund at the East Central State University Foundation in lieu of flowers.

But less than a year after retiring, he faced allegations that he sexually harassed male subordinates. Boren cut all ties with the university in 2019 following the claims. ... The allegations never led to criminal charges. An investigation was launched by the university, but those records have not been made publicly available. ... Boren denied all wrongdoing throughout the investigation.
But the allegations were reminiscent of a strange exchange during Boren's campaign for U.S. Senate, during which he held a news conference and swore on a Bible that he was not gay or bisexual after his sexuality was questioned by an opposing candidate. ... Boren was the first person in Oklahoma to serve as governor, U.S. senator and president of the University of Oklahoma.

Boren was born in Texas to Mark L. and Nannie Boren. The only daughter out of nine children, she was the sister of United States Congressman Lyle Boren. When Boren was two years old the family moved to Oklahoma. She attended East Central State College and the University of Oklahoma, where she earned a bachelor's degree in journalism. She obtained a public teaching certificate and taught English and journalism at schools throughout Oklahoma.

Lyle Hagler Boren (May 11, 1909 - July 2, 1992) was a U.S. Democratic Party politician and a member of the United States House of Representatives from Oklahoma, serving from 1937 to 1947 and was defeated for renomination in the 1946 election. He was known for his independence in the party, opposing labor union strikes on defense plants and attempts to expand the federal government.
Boren attracted national attention for his criticism of The Grapes of Wrath. He was active in state politics long after leaving Congress and is the father of former U.S. Senator and Oklahoma Governor David Boren, and grandfather of former U.S. Congressman Dan Boren, who represented Oklahoma's 2nd congressional district from 2005 to 2013.
Early life and career
Boren was born near Waxahachie, Texas, the son of Nannie May (ne Weatherall) and Mark Latimer Boren, and moved to Lawton, Oklahoma in 1917, where he attended public schools. He finished high school in Choctaw, Oklahoma graduating from Choctaw High School, where the activities center used to bear his name until it was renamed in 2021. His sister was the "Heartbreak Hotel" songwriter Mae Axton. Boren was graduated from East Central College at Ada, Oklahoma, in 1930. From 1930 to 1935, he was a school teacher in Wolf, Oklahoma, and later served as a deputy procurement officer for the United States Department of the Treasury. Furthermore, he was involved in agricultural and mercantile business interests. He married the former Christine McKown, an Oklahoma State University graduate and public school teacher, in 1936, and had two children, David Boren and Susan Boren Dorman, and two grandchildren including Dan Boren.
