JD Vance Warns There's 'Very Strong Evidence' China, Russia Want Greenland

Source: Newsweek

Vice President JD Vance criticized Denmark on Friday for what he called an "underinvestment" in Greenland, saying there was "very strong evidence" that Russia and China want the island and access to its resources. Vance's remarks at Pituffik Space Base in Greenland come as President Donald Trump advocates for a United States takeover of the island.

(snip)

"Our message to Denmark is very simple," Vance said during the visit. "You have not done a good job by the people of Greenland. Denmark has not kept pace in devoting the resources necessary to keep this base, to keep our troops, and in my view to keep the people of Greenland safe from a lot of aggressive incursions from Russia, from China, and from other nations."

(snip)

"Why does Greenland matter so much?" Vance said. "We know that Russia and China and other nations are taking an extraordinary interest in Arctic passageways, Arctic naval routes, and in the minerals of the Arctic territories. We need to ensure America is leading in the Arctic."

Nothing like a little fearmongering to show your weakness, Vance. magas are stupid enough to believe it but the smarter people of Greenland sure the hell won't.

We probably don't need to include all of our worldwide allies, maybe those just in the northwestern hemisphere or something. We could call it something like the "Organization of Trusted Allied Nations" or something.

But Trump seems determined to destroy NATO

The reality is Trump wants Greenland in order to weaken Europe and NATO in the face of Russian aggression.

It seems absurd for Vance to make this statement in the face of Trump’s openly pro-Russia, pro-authoritarian stance.

I guess it is someone other than Trump who holds the key that winds up the JD Vance doll.

the US used to have in Greenland:

Before the gruesome twosome went on their wannabe mafiosi badmouthing spree, Denmark would no doubt have been amenable, as it has been in the past. It and Greenland have already had to put up with the hell of a mess US forces left behind when they abandoned their bases the last time, including a subterranean city, Camp Century, with its own nuclear reactor that's slowly starting to surface with the retreat of the Arctic ice. Nothing has been done about cleaning up their crap. This was the Bluie East airbase that was abandoned in 1947. Many rotting buildings contain (well, barely nowadays) asbestos, and some of the rusting barrels potentially contain poisonous chemicals:

Now increasing the US's military presence might well be seen as a sinister and hostile move. Great diplomacy.

TSF and Putin are as thick as thieves. Putin would never do anything to harm this country, its economy, its territorial interests because of his deep and abiding love for TSF. At least, that's what TSF has indicated.

we left behind back in the late '40s. I had no idea we left rusting, deteriorating buildings, barrels full of toxic who knows what. Even a once underground nuclear facility that's now surfacing
as the Arctic ice is receding.

Once the land is restored to how you found it, we'll talk about a mutual protection pact between our two nations — no need for any invasion/occupation. Sort of like what we thought we had with NATO. Remember that?

The island is certainly not going anywhere. We're here, We'll lease you more land for a base/bases with clauses for clean up and leave it how you found it in the future, and leave it there so Russia, China and whoever knows of the pact and to keep away.

Again, no need for an invasion, we'll talk late about mineral development with an agreed upon compensation percentage as it is our land and our minerals.

How about that bully boys?

35. any foreign invasion would instantly turn into a search and rescue operation
Sat Mar 29, 2025, 01:57 PM

That's the adapted message (it's a paraphrase of what people say about an actual invasion of the Canadian High Artctic) of this Danish analysis. This is the real situation, without Trumpian bullshit: China has no particular interest - they once put in a bid to run the main airport, but withdrew it (and all you need to do to avoid that is say "thanks but no thanks" ), and that's it; Russia would like a way to send out nuclear subs from its Arctic bases unnoticed, but that just needs international cooperation, not a change of government (or "ownership", as Trump wants to think of it).

Don’t get Greenland’s role in Arctic security wrong

President Donald J. Trump insists on buying or taking Greenland “for purposes of national security and freedom throughout the world”. Most recently, he cited one reason that “you don’t even need binoculars – you look outside. You have China ships all over the place. You have Russian ships all over the place.” This is a misunderstanding that conflates what goes on in different parts of the Arctic, and it is dangerous for all of us if the US acts on it.
...
Canadian officers are fond of explaining how any foreign invasion of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago neighbouring Greenland would instantly turn into a search and rescue operation. Once ashore, invaders would not be able to go anywhere. No two Greenlandic settlements are connected by roads. The coastline is cut through with deep fjords, glaciers and sharp mountain ranges. Going inland will demand a weeks-long crossing of the inland ice. Greenlanders, knowing their geography, fear no invasion. However, they do worry that civilian critical infrastructure is vulnerable to sabotage – particularly telecommunications that depend on only two submarine cables.

The US already controls the territory in terms of military security, as formalised in a 1951 agreement with Denmark co-signed by the autonomous Government of Greenland in 2004. There are no Chinese investments or infrastructure in Greenland. It is very difficult to conceive of any military installation or activity which the Danish or Greenlandic authorities would be able to deny the US. Let alone any they would want to deny, if the US explained its necessity.
...
Chinese activity is very far from Greenland
...
Fourth, Russian second-strike capability in the event of a nuclear conflict relies on submarines having come out of Murmansk, hiding under the polar ice, and sneaking through the “GIUK” gap between Greenland, Iceland and the UK. So there might indeed be Russian vessels in the vicinity of Greenland. The US, the UK and Norway are “phishing” for these submarines. Denmark is likely going to chip in as a result of the defence spending negotiations currently being concluded in the Danish parliament.
