Trump says he 'couldn't care less' if automakers raise prices due to tariffs and believes it'll make people buy American
Source: NBC
-snip-
The president said he couldnt care less if foreign automakers raised prices after he announced he would impose 25% tariffs on all foreign-made automobiles.
-snip-
When pressed if he told CEOs not to raise prices, as reported in the The Wall Street Journal, Trump added, No, I never said that. I couldnt care less if they raise prices, because people are going to start buying American-made cars.
Trump continued, I couldnt care less. I hope they raise their prices, because if they do, people are gonna buy American-made cars. We have plenty.

The president also said the tariffs would be permanent.

I'll believe the WSJ over Trump any day.
The article also has Trump saying he won't be firing anyone over Signalgate, which he called fake news and a witchhunt.
And he said he's "100%" going to get Greenland. See this post in GD: https://www.democraticunderground.com/100220189071
The full headline was slightly too long to fit:

The very stable genius proffering the well-known economic theory that people buy more when the price goes up.

In any case, the story is written very poorly. It first discusses foreign automakers raising prices, then it addresses whether Trump told US automakers not to raise prices, as the WSJ reported. Then it is thoroughly unclear about which group he is referring to when he says "I hope they raise their prices, because if they do, people are gonna buy American-made cars." One hopes he is talking about the foreign automakers here, as that would at least make sense, but the article is ambiguous on that point.
ON EDIT: YOU SHOULD HAVE POSTED THIS PART TOO
After the interview, an aide to the president followed up with NBC News to say that Trump was referring specifically to foreign car prices.

(1,179 posts)They laid off 600 of them starting July 15th. Many of them havent prepared for this. They aint got two nickels to rub together (as my dad would say), but theyre sure this is some kinda stroke of genius on orangeys part. My husband is laid back as hell, but he cant stand to discuss his coworkers cluelessness with me, because it pisses him off. Its a cult of morons. The steel mill in Canada who also laid off 600 people, told their workers its on account of the tariffs, but Cliffs told their workers here that it wasnt about tariffs.

(5,228 posts)"what's an American made car?" Chevy... Ford... ? They use foreign parts; does that make them foreign? What about all those incidental parts people don't think about that come from China, VietNam, Mexico, etc?
Are we to have NO new cars until there are manufacturing business running up to speed once again in America? Dream the fuck on! Talk about expensive as hell cars! We'll be paying for the cars AND for their infrastructure investment for decades and decades. That'll really do a lot for them!

(59,396 posts)their cars longer resulting in fewer sales which means fewer shifts, then layoffs and recession. Still an idiot.
Shoot. My 2025 Camry XSE cost $40k. A 25% tariff on it would have made the car $50k. And it could go up further than that: 40% of a new cars price is the cost of the computer chips that run it. Cantaloupe Caligula the Corpulent has threatened tariffs on imported computer chips. Until TSMC and Intel get their plants built, damn near every processor will be imported. So, theres potentially an even bigger increase than what is being discussed.

(3,322 posts)Caligula has threatened tariffs on imported computer chips - which are the vast majority of them. They comprise a large percentage of the cost of a new car. So, there wouldnt be just a 25% cost increase at the end. There would also be the hit to the auto makers (domestic manufacturers would also be hit with this cost increase) for the computer components, and they arent going to soak up that cost themselves. The buyer is going to eat that assuming they can pay for a new car.

(37,622 posts)they are only interested in huge SUVs and pickups that they can make $10k on. I don't have a need for a
$80k pickup, Escalade or Yukon. I bought a Honda CRV in 2020, other than regular oil changes I bought a
set of tires in 5 years. The Honda was assembled in the US while many of the domestic brands are assembled in
other countries.

Yes, some parts are from Mexico and Canada. Much of that will be moving shortly when the tariffs kick in.

(53,705 posts)On cars and trucks, steel and aluminum will be tariff taxed. It'll be a long time before US can become self-sufficient in steel, and longer for aluminum (electricity from Canada is tariff taxed, as is the aluminum).
Car parts will be tariff taxed. No US made car is made from 100% US parts. Parts are partly or mostly coming in from Canada and Mexico mainly but also some other countries.
