Police say ICE tactics are eroding public trust in local law enforcement

In Santa Fe County, N.M., last month, local police leaders stood before a packed auditorium and showed photos of their uniforms so residents would know what they look like — and, more pointedly, what ICE does not. "Whatever happens around the country, whoever is president, you are our community. We are your officers," Santa Fe Police Chief Paul Joye said with the help of a Spanish interpreter. "It is a fundamental human right that you feel safe in your home regardless of where you're from."

Meetings like this have been playing out nationwide in recent weeks. Police departments are holding town halls, releasing videos and statements, and adding FAQ sections to their websites. They're trying to communicate the same message: They are not immigration officers and residents should not be afraid to call them.

It's not uncommon for many people living in the U.S. without legal status to be wary of police. But as the Trump administration's immigration enforcement efforts have intensified, local police leaders say the fear many immigrants experience has also ramped up, and it's making their jobs harder.

"The one issue, honestly, that's keeping police chiefs up at night is dealing with immigration," says Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum. "Dealing with their communities, dealing with federal law enforcement, they really find themselves caught in the middle and trying to navigate that ground as best they can."

theory, find illegal immigrants to deport). How many of us now feel that someone is watching us now? I even wonder about going to some bars in particular, or other odd places to shop or such, knowing that perhaps someone spying on us. Who is safe anymore? Who gave ICE the authority to shift through our lives, bang down our doors, w/o a hearing no less. Some innocent people have been actually sent back overseas when they were blue blood Americans already.

I refuse to give these animals 1 inch in acting out their harmful and hateful ways on their fellow Americans. We deserve to be treated w/ respect and if need be, we also deserve warrants (legally prepared as they should be), prior to ICE or any other government agenda manned by djt's thugs prior to rampaging through our lives, our homes, our workplaces, our cars.

The Trump Administration. They want the police to act as a military force disjoint from the populace, while also dressing like them. They want a Gestapo to carry out political arrests. They want to spread fear.

They’re in the stage they don’t give a fuck what the public thinks. They’ve hit critical mass, or, at least believe they have.

I sure as all git-out, will not open the door to anyone wearing any kind of LEO uniform. Period.
If they have a valid warrant, they will knock and barge in within 3 seconds. If they don't have a warrant, then I have nothing to discuss with them except "Please leave my property".

Local law enforcement, and even game wardens, have long been cooperating with ICE here. I am not surprised that some law enforcement agencies are realizing that was a mistake, but don't gaslight us about it.
