Tesla's stock price continued falling on Monday, deepening its year-to-date decline to 36 percent.
Why It Matters
The drop, spurred by negative sentiment toward Tesla CEO Elon Musk over his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cuts under President Donald Trump, makes Tesla one of the worst-performing stocks in the S&P 500 so far this year. Dramatic market swings have become the norm in Trump's second term, driven by uncertainty over the president's tariff plans and investors' concerns that the tariffs will fuel inflation and slow economic growth.
What To Know
Tesla's stock price at market close on December 31, 2024, was $403.84. By the time markets closed on Monday, the electric vehicle company's stock price was $259.16, resulting in a 35.82 percent decline over the first quarter of 2025.
The carmaker has been a target for anti-Musk demonstrators who oppose his high-profile role in leading the Trump administration's government cost-cutting initiatives. Tesla showrooms and factories across the country have been inundated with protests and there have been multiple reports of people vandalizing, firebombing and otherwise damaging Tesla vehicles.

(2,390 posts)It was around $150 last year. Grossly overvalued still---but I'm enjoying watching it deflate. Hopefully to ZERO.

(238 posts)to drop to under $100 per share to really have an impact. Its nice to watch the decline, but buyers keep jumping back in and propping the stock up.
If people stop buying Teslas, which is happening, stock price doesn't mean shit.

(23,614 posts)Stock prices jump around for all kinds of reasons. But when Elon can't sell his cars because people are embarrassed to be associated with his brand, that brand is in trouble.

It's frankly incredible that any business organ can again cite responsibility to the shareholders as a reason for anything. This is the most massive and historic violation of duty to the shareholder in the history of capitalism. And that includes Enron. It's beyond belief.

(7,603 posts)Tesla shareholders are very used to the peaks and valleys. Its still up 700% over the last 5 years and about 60% over the last year. Its back at the same price it was in November before the election so the only people that are truly upset are the idiots that bought around December or January when it hit that ridiculous peak of around $450.

(7,603 posts)That I think people just got used to its absurd stock price. It was $38 a share 5 years ago, today its still worth about 7x that. Its still up about 60% from where it was a year ago.
Politics aside, there is no logical reason it should be worth more than Ford, GM, Chrysler (Stelantis or whatever), Toyota, Hyundai, Mercedes, BMW and Honda combined.

(9 posts)My son (who has always voted Democrat) bought a Tesla three years ago to have an eco friendly vehicle for his daily commute and now he is afraid to park it in a public place.
My wife (who has always voted Democrat) is a retired teacher with a state pension that is vested in Tesla stock.
My nephew (don't know how he votes) lives in Texas and works at the Tesla plant.
As a retired Environmental Engineer I care about the environment and it is disconcerting to see the premier EV manufacturer in trouble because of Musk's stupidity.
Tesla's dive is hurting everybody except Musk. I don't think Musk gives a crap about Tesla anymore. He could lose every cent he has in Tesla and still be the richest man in America.
