The investigation that led to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid of an Omaha meatpacking plant uncovered approximately 70 people who used stolen Social Security numbers and identities, leaving more than 100 victims, ICE spokesperson Tanya Roman said Wednesday.
The ICE investigation into widespread identity fraud led to the workplace enforcement operation at Glenn Valley Foods in south Omaha on June 10, where more than than 70 people were arrested and more than 65 are believed to remain in custody.
Roman said the identity fraud victims were left to face "devastating financial, emotional and legal consequences.
The news release did not provide a complete list of allegations but provided four examples of victims.

(908 posts)when we were a democracy? If so it may have some merit but I don't trust any investigations under the tRump regime. The corporation should lose their ability to do business and the officers should be fines, jailed. This probably goes on at many shady low wage businesses.

(3,259 posts)sounds like the problems faced by most of the victims of the identity theft were due to the system flagging potential fraud, not immigrants stealing from citizens.

Among the identity theft victims include a disabled person in Texas who struggled to access Social Security disability payments due to a Glenn Valley Foods employees fraudulent use of his identity.
One victim was denied medically necessary prescriptions in Pennsylvania after their name and Social Security number was used by a Glenn Valley Foods employee to gain healthcare benefits, she said.
According to Roman, a Glenn Valley Foods employee fraudulently used the identity of a Missouri nursing student, causing the student to lose access to college tuition assistance because they were falsely reported to make too much money. She said the same student also struggled to renew their driver's license because the person who used their identity had multiple unpaid traffic violations.
A California victim, Roman said, worked "for nearly 15 years to regain their identity and fix the financial damage"
The audit also found that 10 names used by employees at Glenn Valley matched those of people who had made Federal Trade Commission complaints. When agents reached out to those who had filed complaints, the respondents included the woman whose name and Social Security number Mejia allegedly used.
