Immigration raids leave crops unharvested, California farms at risk

Source: Reuters

Lisa Tate is a sixth-generation farmer in Ventura County, California, an area that produces billions of dollars worth of fruit and vegetables each year, much of it hand-picked by immigrants in the U.S. illegally.

Tate knows the farms around her well. And she says she can see with her own eyes how raids carried out by agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the area’s fields earlier this month, part of President Donald Trump’s migration crackdown, have frightened off workers.

“In the fields, I would say 70% of the workers are gone,” she said in an interview. “If 70% of your workforce doesn’t show up, 70% of your crop doesn’t get picked and can go bad in one day. Most Americans don’t want to do this work. Most farmers here are barely breaking even. I fear this has created a tipping point where many will go bust.”

In the vast agricultural lands north of Los Angeles, stretching from Ventura County into the state’s central valley, two farmers, two field supervisors and four immigrant farmworkers told Reuters this month that the ICE raids have led a majority of workers to stop showing up.

That means crops are not being picked and fruit and vegetables are rotting at peak harvest time, they said.

Land speculators buy up land, get 'agricultural land' tax rates then when it is financially beneficial, they cover some of the best, most productive farm land into the world with overpriced houses that will not last long.

The land in Ventura County is amazingly productive, but those who want all the $$ now want to plant housing tracks. Their plans are also the root of turning public lands over to logging.

Build where the land isn't as productive. People need housing, yes, but they need food too.

are targeting California anyway the can to try and sink the state that has the fourth largest economy of all nations.

The selling off of Public lands to the wealthy is also going to inflate the pocket books of the wealthy.
They will be offering the land at way way below market value to the Uber Rich Oligarchs for them to develop.....
For instance, take the National forests around somewhere like Vail, that aren't built on due to them being federal lands......
if sold to the Uber Rich, they can then develop it with tons more of outrageously expensive houses.

In the fields where the fruit used to thrive,
Few are left now to keep it alive.
With the workers all gone,
The ripe crops stay on—
And they rot while the farms can't survive.

In areas where the sunlight once blessed,
Now the silence hangs heavy, oppressed.
With the workers in flight,
Crops decay out of sight—
And the land mourns the lives it divest.

How long before we see bread lines and empty shelves? Oh, wait, we did see that during his first term.

The monied elite and corporate America are getting what they paid for and the rubes and racists of America are getting what they voted for. But most of America will suffer the consequence. This is what happens when you put a guy in charge of reinventing the wheel, when he can't even figure out you can't put a square peg into the round hole. But, he's a genius.

Our Country wasn't perfect but it was good while it lasted.

Who would have figured working fields soaked with Round-up was bad for your health?

They need bodies to work the fields...big ag will happily exploit prison labor. The only other option is to actually pay enough to attract legal workers and we all know that would mean twenty dollar cantaloupes and that ain't gonna happen.

In addition, now that the Supreme Court has ruled that prisoners can no longer sue the government many will disappear into a never-ending Hell.
