Omaha's version of nationwide 'Good Trouble Lives On' demonstration focuses on local issues

A crowd gathered in Omaha’s Heartland of America Park Thursday evening as part of the national “Good Trouble Lives On” day of action, a sequel to the “No Kings” protests in June to stand against actions and policies of the Trump administration.

Most of the signs held by attendees referenced national issues like immigrant rights or the Jeffrey Epstein client list. But for many speakers and attendees, Omaha issues were front and center.

Mariah Johnson, a community organizer with the liberation-focused I Be Black Girl, spoke to several hundred attendees, listing the names of four Black men: Steven Phipps Jr., Cameron Ford, Janidi Ibrahim and Edward Henry. Phipps, Ford and Ibrahim were each killed by law enforcement officers in Omaha over the past year — in each instance the killing was deemed justified or did not result in an indictment from a grand jury. Henry died in jail, and his death was ruled a heart attack.

Johnson said those men’s lives were stolen and “we gather here not just in protest, but in legacy.” She channeled Georgia Rep. John Lewis, the Civil Rights leader who served for 33 years in Congress until his death five years ago Thursday. “Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month or a year. It is the struggle of a lifetime. Never be afraid to make some noise and get in good, necessary trouble,” Johnson said.

Coinciding with the the five-year anniversary of Georgia Rep. John Lewis’ death, the rally was planned as part of a national day of action in response to what the organizer’s website calls an attack on civil rights by the Trump Administration.
