The White House rejected Maryland's request for federal disaster assistance after flooding in May damaged homes and businesses in Allegany and Garrett counties, Gov. Wes Moore said Wednesday.
The governor requested a Presidential Disaster Declaration in June to aid in the recovery effort after the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Maryland Department of Emergency Management (MDEM) found that it could cost nearly $15.8 million.
"These communities demonstrated a clear need through FEMA's own process, and Maryland will appeal the decision to seek all available resources to support the recovery efforts," the governor said Wednesday.
Flooding in Western Maryland
Flash flooding on May 13 damaged more than 200 homes and affected businesses, roads and public utilities. People were rescued from flooded schools, and some were trapped overnight during power outages.
Severe flooding devastated some Western Maryland communities in Allegany and Garrett counties, where children had to be rescued from their schools this week.

WASHINGTON (7News) Maryland will not receive federal disaster funding to help recovery efforts after devastating flooding in May that heavily impacted the state's western region, according to a statement from Governor Wes Moore on Wednesday.
According to a statement from the Governor's office, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) claimed the May flooding in Garrett and Allegany counties, which caused roughly $15.8 million in damages and response costs, did not meet federal disaster assistance criteria.

(18,659 posts)I'm trying to recall if I can ever remember it happening.
Of all the horrific things this administration is doing, the thing that pisses me off the most are the steps he is taking to increase the likelihood that Americans are killed or financially destroyed by natural disasters and global warming, and that the agencies that exist for the purpose of warning, defending and making us whole after a disaster are rendered dysfunctional.

(12 posts)Those 2 counties are redder than a fire engine. They really should be handed over to like minded and backward West VA, another derelict and basket case hellhole. That way they can enjoy their poverty and environmental degradation together. So, I hope all the MAGAs there are pleased with their votes for Trump in 2016, 2020 and 2024. There is also a church on every corner in their towns full of holier-than-thou evangelicals who prefer to vote for the party of pedophiles and insurrectionists. Hypocrites.
One resident said to me a few years ago that she would never let her young kids watch Harry Potter flicks because they were anti Christian and pro devil. What a jerk.
We here in central MD pay the taxes that keep those 2 counties afloat. All we get in return is animosity. Their only upside is some beautiful mountain scenery, but avoid West VA where the mountains are blown up, a process called 'mountain top removal,' to expose veins of coal. Trump said in his first reign of error that he would bring back good paying coal mining jobs to that state. Where are they?

WESTERNPORT For a poor, rural county where nearly 70% of voters helped put Donald Trump back in the White House, the presidents denial of federal disaster help is especially painful.
Westernport Administrator Laura Freeman-Legge and the towns mayor, Judy Hamilton, were in a meeting with Gov. Wes Moores office and the Maryland Department of Emergency Management on Wednesday when they got the bad news.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency denied disaster assistance for local areas, including Westernport and Georges Creek, that were ravaged by floodwaters in May.
No reason for the denial was available Wednesday.

(19,980 posts)He may favor Republican Governors to a degree ONLY when they kiss his wrinkly ass and praise him in public. The TACO gets off on making states beg for money as they grovel before him like he's some god-damned King or something.
I can only imagine how Ronnie D is going to act when Florida gets hit with a Cat 5 Hurricane, or any Republican dominated state for that matter.
