Trump announces 100% tariffs on pharmaceuticals unless drug makers are building U.S. factories

Source: MarketWatch

Published: Sept. 25, 2025 at 7:54 p.m. ET

President Donald Trump announced a raft of new tariffs late Thursday, including a 100% levy on imported pharmaceuticals unless their manufacturers are actively building factories in the U.S.

In a series of social-media posts, Trump also announced new 50% tariffs on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, 30% tariffs on upholstered furniture and 25% levies on heavy trucks, all effective Oct. 1.

Trump said those tariffs are to protect American businesses from overseas manufacturers “flooding” the market. “It is a vary unfair practice, but we must protect, for National Security and other reasons, our Manufacturing process,” Trump said in a post.

The tariffs on branded or patented pharmaceuticals will also take effect Oct. 1, Trump said.

https://phrma.org/policy-issues/research-development/biopharmaceutical-manufacturing
Setting up the manufacturing capacity and all the pieces that go with it is a complex and lengthy process. Building a new manufacturing facility, for example, can cost up to $2 billion and take 5 to 10 years before it is operational, including the time and costs related to comply with various regulatory requirements. Expanding existing facilities and transferring a single product to a new manufacturing site isn’t any simpler. It requires process transfer and scale-up, validation, stability protocols and regulatory filings, which can take several years. Investments by biopharmaceutical companies are used to build, expand or upgrade facilities to supply the next generation of cutting-edge therapies in America. As companies have added new manufacturing lines and expanded existing ones to increase production capacity, the number of biopharmaceutical manufacturing plants has grown in recent years, now numbering 1,556 facilities across 48 states and Puerto Rico. Further, nearly 20% of these new facilities are manufacturing active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), which are the ingredients that produce a medicine’s intended health effects.

In the meantime about 90% of all pharmaceuticals are imported, including very close to 100% of generic drugs. Applying a 100% tariff to imported drugs will cause prices to skyrocket. Not only will Trump fail to drop drug prices by 1500% ( ), there will be no way to get prices to drop at all. Is he trying to make sure that many/most pharmaceuticals become completely unavailable in the US?

One of the goals of 2025 is to get the us population down to ten million.

That means a lot of people are going to die.

If you look at this shit as a way to reduce population it makes sense in a very morbid and precise way.

Trump knows hospitals will close as he cuts Medicaid. He wants them to close. it’s to cull the poor, old and disabled. But he wants do this genocide in what looks like seperated unconnected policy indirectly done like what common denominator is the cuts to food stamps and vaccine policy by loons? And immigration policy? (people will suffer and die) that way they think nobody can see the blood on Republican , maga, heritage foundation and billionaire hands.

Food stamp cuts , removing immigrants so food production is slowed to a crawl and produce rots in the fields and tariffs will all help kill the poor ,lower and middle class. People will tighten thier belts until apoplexy rather then start revolting fighting in the streets blowing up yachts and mansions ,questioning capitalism and the billionaire spending habits and priorities. They’ll die.

Camps for autistic people, adhd and mental illness, they are not going to be forthcoming about how these people are treated on those farms.just like how they are tight lipped about what happens to immigrants in ice detention. I suspect many will get those involuntary injections. Again people die.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but that’s absolutely crazy…

A population that small for a country of our size would be unsustainable. You can’t have a sufficiently large military and industrial base with a population of that size.

Sure, immigrants, robots, and AI will fill some of the gap, but not enough…

Any info on why that number, or a place where I can educate myself ? (I’m at work and can’t do it myself right now…)

They intend to make it a christian theocracy. I doubt they care about those others.
Funny thing though, MAGA is the one doing all the fake science so they may go first, like the pandemic.

15. Any Type II diabetics here?

My wife takes NovoLog and Levemir insulin.

NovoLog and Levemir insulin are manufactured by Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company. The manufacturing sites for NovoLog insulin include:

Denmark: Kalundborg
United States: Clayton, North Carolina
France: Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines
China: Shanghai
Brazil: Rio de Janeiro

We are the luckiest people on earth because -- we are both on Medicare and, because I am retired military, we have military TriCare For Life as our secondary and as our prescription insurance. Right now, we pay about $100 for 90 day supply of each. I can't imagine what Type II diabetics who are not as fortunate as we are going to do.

Another common insulin product is manufactured by Solostar. SoloSTAR insulin pens are manufactured by Sanofi and are assembled at their plant in Beijing, China, which opened in May 2012. Sanofi also produces insulin in France, investing in new facilities there to expand production.
Here's a breakdown:
Manufacturer: Sanofi, a major insulin producer.
Product: The Lantus SoloSTAR is a pre-filled insulin injection pen.
Manufacturing Location: Sanofi's facility in Beijing, China, assembles and packages the pens.
Insulin Production: Sanofi also manufactures insulin in other locations, including France.
