Dozens of employees were fired from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) late on Friday, as the Trump Administration made good on its promise to begin mass firings in response to a prolonged government shutdown.

The layoffs targeted leaders in departments related to respiratory diseases, chronic diseases, injury prevention and global health, the New York Times reported. Roughly 70 Epidemic Intelligence Service officers, also known as “disease detectives”, the entire staff and editors of the CDC’s publication Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), and the agency’s Washington office were all notified of their termination, according to the report.

It comes as the agency is still reeling from months of uncertainty after a change in leadership and priorities under new Health and Human Services (HHS) head Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Dr. Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, said Friday’s layoffs would be a death blow for an agency that has already been gutted by previous cuts under Kennedy’s leadership.

“CDC will have lost its ability to detect outbreaks and respond to them. It will no longer be able to track diseases, in America and around the globe. That includes infectious threats like flu, foodborne illnesses, and Ebola, as well as chronic diseases and injuries,” she said.

After details about the firings became public, a federal health official said Saturday that some layoff notices had been sent in error and would be reversed, including for those leading the measles response, those responding to an Ebola outbreak, CDC’s global health leadership, and some CDC disease detectives. The official did not detail how many of the more than 1,000 layoffs would be reversed.

"Sent in error" either means someone saw the news reports saying "not functional" or "this will kill people" and they decided they had to back away, or there's someone with some power who, when they heard about it, said "are you crazy? WTF do you think will happen? Fix this right now!".

Being designated as non-essential, with respect to a shut-down, doesn't mean the job isn't essential - overall. It means that in a situation in which the entity is closed, those employees should not report to work because they are not essential to preventing disaster when the entity is operating under emergency circumstances.

Happens routinely in government entities - when there is a snow emergency, non-essential employees are told to stay at home. Essential employees (like emergency personnel, a skeleton building maintenance crew, etc.) have to report even when there is an emergency.

Of course, they actually know this, but are looking for another excuse to blame Democrats. They know most people don't understand the government meaning of non-essential and will assume they are accurate when they blame it on the units who identified more waste and fraud by pointing out the worthless workers just taking up space.
