House committee unlikely to interview Ghislaine Maxwell after her lawyer said she wouldn't answer questions

WASHINGTON — The House Oversight Committee has shelved plans to depose convicted sex offender Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein's co-conspirator and confidant, after Maxwell informed the committee that she planned to plead the Fifth.

The Committee had intended to travel to Texas, where Maxwell is being held in a federal prison camp, to conduct the interview. But in an interview with Politico, Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., said he is re-thinking those plans because of Maxwell’s decision not to answer any of the committee’s questions.

“Her lawyers have replied that she’s not going to answer any questions,” Comer told Politico. “She’s only going to plead the Fifth. I mean, I could spend a bunch of taxpayer dollars to send staff and members down there, and if she’s going to plead the Fifth, I don’t know that that’s a good investment.”

A spokesperson for the Oversight Committee confirmed the chairman’s remarks to NBC News.

This woman can sing Trump's praises all day long but cannot answer a few questions in front of Congress.

All to show she holds the cards? She is a CONVICTED SEX TRAFFICKER! Not even a pardon will erase that! She will not experience a moment's peace if let out of prison for keeping her mouth shut.

It is not like she can fade into obscurity.

She should be carted before Congress with a mask like the late, great Hannibal Lecter.

She’s getting everything she wants from Orangina. Why would she cooperate with Congress? Ain’t nothing in it for her. And that’s her only metric.

She's already been convicted of perjury, so why would you automatically believe anything she said - including the claim she would plead the fifth to every question - that statement wasn't even made under oath. SHe very well could be lying about that in order to try to avoid being put into a very uncomfortable situation. She can only legally plead the fifth to protect herself against self incrimination. She could not legally refuse to answer questions about other people just to protect them. Having to answer questions about other people would likely open her up to additional perjury charges (if she lies) or put her in danger (if she tells the truth).
