Ukraine makes significant changes to US 'peace plan', sources say

Source: The Guardian

Ukraine has significantly amended the US “peace plan” to end the conflict, removing some of Russia’s maximalist demands, people familiar with the negotiations said, as European leaders warned on Monday that no deal could be reached quickly.

[snip]

The original 28-point US-Russian plan was drawn up last month by Kirill Dmitriev, Vladimir Putin’s special envoy, and Trump’s representative Steve Witkoff. It calls on Ukraine to withdraw from cities it controls in the eastern Donbas region, limit the size of its army, and not join Nato.

During negotiations on Sunday in Switzerland – led by the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, and Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak – the plan was substantially revised. It now includes only 19 points. Kyiv and its European partners say the existing frontline has to be the starting point for territorial discussions.

They say there can be no recognition of land seized by Russia militarily, and add that Kyiv should make its own decisions on whether to join the EU and Nato – something the Kremlin wants to veto or impose conditions on.

1. 'peace plan', thank you, Guardian. At least someone is doing the work our 'media' won't do.

it's their decision of that they want to do with their country. They should join EU and NATO. Kick out Hungary, Orban is a dictator and align with Putin.

More like a rejection. Jeff Bozos always willing to carry water for billionaire fascists. "What's in it for me?" Jeff thinks.

5. Russia as aggressor, has no say. Give Ukraine weapons including nukes. Russia withdraws, pays reparations. Full Stop.

Also, there should be war crimes tribunals.

Reparations and War Crime Tribunals are highly unlikely. No one is "giving" Ukraine nuclear weapons.

7. Let's negotiate on it though

And let's put that 28 point nonsense plan that Trump originally had even deeper on the "not going to happen" scale.

10. I was wishful thinking online. I know they're not getting their nukes back.

They should get more powerful conventional weapons with greater range though. And Russia should have to completely withdraw. I would hope for a buffer zone 50 miles into Russia along the border. And a no fly zone. And both NATO and EU membership. If Russia doesn’t agree, increase bombing of infrastructure inside Russia and wipe out the 40000 troops they just infiltrated into Pokrovsk region with a huge influx of anti armor weapons and DPICM.

11. In general, there's way too much wishful thinking in DU comments on Ukraine.

It's tough to be a Pollyanna after such a horrible, grinding 3-year horror.

Ukraine is in a tight spot - running low on ordinance and personnel, while Russia continues to terrorize the civilian populace and bomb the country's infrastructure back to the stone age. Putin doesn't appear to care about Russian losses.

Where would Ukraine get a "huge influx of anti-armor and DPICM"? Europe? Not Trump.

12. We have the ordnance, and we're not in Iraq or Afghanistan anymore.

Israel has had huge stockpiles of US ordnance and spare parts. It eventually expires and needs to be used or cooked off before it might explode. We need revenue. Even if Europe and US donors pay for some of it it’s better than nothing. Ukraine and European partners are starting to produce spare parts and munitions for US and European supplied weapons systems.
