128 people known to have died in Hong Kong fire as eight more arrests made

Source: BBC

At least 128 people are now known to have died in a devastating fire that engulfed multiple high-rise buildings in Hong Kong.

A further 79 people have been injured in the city's deadliest blaze in more than 70 years, which occurred in Tai Po on Wednesday. Dozens remain missing.

The Wang Fuk Court blocks had been undergoing renovations when the fire began. The cause remains unclear - but officials say that polystyrene and protective netting placed on the outside of the windows facilitated its spread.

Eight people were arrested on Friday on suspicion of corruption over the renovation works. Three other people were detained earlier on manslaughter charges.

These are the kinds of things that will happen when the current American oligarchs get the deregulation that they purchased from Trump.

That would be downright un-american. It might be SOCIALISM. (Somebody bring my vapors before I faint.)

I thought that smelling salts are used to prevent fainting which is what I also thought having "the vapors" means.

And I think socialism means so many things to so many people in so many contexts now it's pretty much meaningless by now. It's become more of a buzzword, used to elicit an emotional response and not really valuable for constructive conversation.

I was recently reminded of Harry Truman's comment about socialism: "Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people." and thought I would use that. As for the vapors, yes, you got me... I was thinking back to Lindsey Graham's comments during the GWB war on some terrorists about the terrorists were going to "kill us all" and imagined him putting his hand to his head saying "Oh dear, I have the vapors." But I screwed that up. Again sorry it wasn't clear about being sarcasm.
