Partners line up for arms deals as Japan opens defense industry door

Announced the same day, the policy shift by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s government allows exports of lethal weaponry and finished systems to the 17 countries that currently have defense equipment and technology transfer agreements with Japan.

For countries including Australia, the Philippines, Britain and Canada, Japan represents a politically aligned, technologically advanced U.S. partner with increasing strategic alignment and shared security concerns, including over China’s growing assertiveness.

What was once a largely U.S.-centered defense supply system is now evolving into a more distributed network, as partners seek greater industrial self-reliance to hedge against bottlenecks and political uncertainty.

Interest is also growing in Europe and Canada. Ottawa’s new defense-industrial strategy aligns with opportunities for collaboration with Tokyo, while NATO members — including Germany, Italy, France and Britain — all welcomed Tuesday’s move, voicing interest in expanding cooperation.

and especially one that isn’t beholden to the whims of American politics, which are fickle and less reliable as a defense partner. Given China and North Korea next door, they’re doing what they have to do.

This also expands partnerships throughout Asia. The world needs to acknowledge that we’re not in 1945 anymore. I hope this makes China uncomfortable and think twice about starting anything with Taiwan.

when Japan implied that it would come to the aid of Taiwan if the mainland tried an invasion.
