US May Day protesters rally against immigration crackdowns, inequality

Activists worldwide gathered for May Day rallies and street protests Friday, calling for peace, higher wages and better working conditions as many workers grapple with rising energy costs and shrinking purchasing power tied to the Iran war.

May 1 is a public holiday in many countries to mark International Workers’ Day, or Labor Day, when workers’ unions traditionally rally around wages, pensions, inequality and broader political issues. Demonstrations were being held from Seoul, Sydney and Jakarta to many European capitals and cities across the United States.

“Working people refuse to pay the price for Donald Trump’s war in the Middle East,” the European Trade Union Confederation, which represents 93 trade union organizations in 41 European countries, said. “Today’s rallies show working people will not stand by and see their jobs and living standards destroyed.”

In the United States, activists opposing U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies are planning marches and boycotts.

These protests are huge, and in NYC people have chained themselves to the fence at the NY stock exchange, putting their bodies on the line.

MSNBC is showing one in downtown Los Angeles and it is really inspiring. There’s people of all ages, including a bunch of 15 year olds who skipped school to serenade the marchers with their high school band instruments. 🥹

Thousands of May Day protesters across Washington state, including hundreds in Seattle, went on strike, rallied and marched Friday in support of worker rights and an end to the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.

The annual May 1 demonstrations were among thousands across the U.S. celebrating International Workers’ Day, marking the 1886 date an estimated 500,000 workers across North America went on strike to demand a legal eight-hour workday.
