Exclusive: VA conducted internal investigations into employees who attended vigil for Alex Pretti

Source: CNN Politics

PUBLISHED May 5, 2026, 6:00 AM ET

For days after the killing of Alex Pretti by federal immigration officers in Minneapolis, fellow workers for the Department of Veterans Affairs held vigils at health centers nationwide, partly in protest and partly to pay their respects. Becky Halioua, a recreational therapist and union leader at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia, said she felt “it was important to acknowledge him, as a brother of our organization.”. “It’s scary for me to think about a fellow VA employee being murdered by the same government that they work for,” Halioua told local TV station WRDW, a CNN affiliate, at the time. “That’s terrifying for me.”

Then Halioua learned she was under investigation by that same government. Her supervisor informed her that an internal probe had been launched into whether she violated agency rules regarding employee interviews with the news media, a probe that could result in disciplinary action. Halioua is not alone, several sources familiar with the matter told CNN. At least three other VA employees have been investigated for their interactions with the press, including at least one other related to Alex Pretti, according to one of the sources.

As part of her investigation, Halioua says investigators emailed her photos of herself at the vigil from news coverage, which also included a brief interaction with a local newspaper. Someone had drawn a line around her image in some photographs, labeled with her name. “It really gave me an uneasy feeling,” she says. Seeing her face circled in a photograph of a crowd seemed “very stalker-like.” VA press secretary Quinn Slaven said he could not comment on Halioua’s case, citing privacy concerns. “Privacy laws prevent VA from publicly discussing specific details about its employees without their written consent,” Slaven said in a written statement.

He did not address more general questions about the VA’s media relations policy and how often it conducts these types of investigations. Federal agencies typically have rules that limit employees from talking about their government role or department in media interviews, while allowing them to speak in a personal capacity. In some cases, Trump administration officials have taken a hard line against federal employees talking with reporters and what they characterize as leaks.

I don't care about their "rules". This was unprecedented and their employees should be given the room to grieve and speak their minds over this heinous act.

Hard to know. VA secretary Doug Collins is a trump appointed POS, so he could have brought it about, but typically that dude tries to appear above the fray. Office of Personnel Management on the other hand has been carrying out all sorts of nonsense. Their shyte is buried in bureaucratic detail so it's more or less invisible outside the agency in question

that person becomes a private citizen. Under the First Amendment, if they wish to join a protest, they are free to say anything they wish as long as they don't disclose information covered by HIPPA. They are free to talk to the press. That's also a First Amendment thing. They can say the VA is the greatest employer in the world. Or they are free to say their employer sucks.

This is intimidation, pure and simple. Ms Halioua says the investigation was "terrifying". The Comey 86 47 indictment is also meant to intimidate.

BTW Petti had the same rights. His murder was also intended to intimidate.

far Americans have lost their free voice when addressing the injustices and brutalities, particularly under this fascist regime. The normalization of quieting any employee private, government, military, administration, and congressional whistleblowers is in full bloom. It boggles the mind to ponder where will the regime finish stopping our resistance.

Incorrect speech shall not be allowed. Are we still America the free, really. Those flag-waving patriots only wave our beloved Stars and Stripes to the winds and whims of Putin and the rest of their autocratic heroes.

Also, I think she was targeted because she is a woman and a union leader. Trump and the Republicans hate both.

Pretti’s local VA was told by higher-ups to “pause the memorial.”

VA Sec Doug Collins (a military chaplain) could have used his training in pastoral care and counseling to comfort Pretti’s traumatized co-workers.

Did he?

Nope.

Instead, Collins put-out a terse, partisan, finger-wagging message blaming Democrats:
Such tragedies are unfortunately happening in Minnesota because of state and local officials’ refusal to cooperate with the federal government to enforce the law and deport dangerous illegal criminals.

No sympathy.
No reflection.
No shared grief.
No condolences.
No bereavement.
No expressions of solidarity.
Nothing for traumatized co-workers (such as lowering flag to half-staff)

Hard to believe someone purporting to be a military Chaplain can be such a boorish, snarky asshole.

Don’t take my word for it.
Google VA Sec Collins and see him being questioned on Capitol Hill.
