New York Knicks win 2026 NBA Finals, end 53-year title drought: Live updates and reaction
Jalen Brunson put forth a heroic performance, scoring 45 points on 14-of-27 shooting

SAN ANTONIO — The New York Knicks are the champions of the National Basketball Association, and those absolutely needed to be the first dozen words of this piece.

I never thought I would type them, and you bet I felt it in my hands when I did. For many years, I would have believed in Santa, the Easter Bunny and the tooth fairy before I believed in the Knicks as the last team standing.

But here they were Saturday night in San Antonio, eliminating the same opponent in Game 5 of the NBA Finals that eliminated them in Game 5 in Madison Square Garden in 1999, the last time the Knicks advanced to the championship round. Twenty-seven years after Tim Duncan lowered the boom on them, Jalen Brunson was the hammer and the otherworldly Victor Wembanyama was the nail.

3. I rarely use the term 'choker', but if ever the term applied it would be to the Spurs.

They could have won all four games they lost.
I don’t like the Knick fans especially those with mucho dinero

but I like even less when the NBA, the refs they employ, and the announcers are all in the business of promoting "the next big star". That is how the NBA has been for basically the whole TV era whether we are talking Magic and Bird, Michael, Durant or now Wemby. That no-call when Wemby didn't give Brunson room to land. That's is a textbook case, but if they made the call, then Wemby would have received a one-game penalty, and we can't have that.

So kudos to the Knicks for having the toughness to win. Virtually all the national goofs had already declared this series for the Spurs before the series even started.

Last year's series betwen Pacers and OK was great because it was just hoops -- two teams playing hard without the league putting their finger on the scale. There were appealing young stars on both teams, but not the kind the league likes to promote.

the most exciting NBA finals series I’ve ever seen. Big lifelong Celtics fan here so that’s saying a lot.
