Trump, Claiming Vandalism, Says Reflecting Pool Will Likely Need to Be Drained

The pool has taken on clouds of algae after a hasty renovation. A three-time Olympian was charged with destroying government property after he says he touched one of the strands of blue paint peeling off the pool's bottom.

President Trump said on Saturday that "multiple individuals" had been arrested for vandalizing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, and that problems with a more than $14 million renovation project had become so severe that the pool would likely have to be at least partly drained for "necessary repairs." ... The president's announcement late Saturday, made on social media, was his starkest acknowledgment of the pool's rapid deterioration in recent days. The water this week became covered by clouds of blooming algae, which were obscuring a floor that had just been painted a shade that Mr. Trump has called "American flag blue." The paint then began to peel off, making it a tourist destination for unusual reasons.

Among those accused of vandalism was David Carter Hearn, 67, a cyclist and three-time Olympian as a canoeist who says he stopped at the site on Friday just to have a look, then reached down to touch a strip of peeling blue paint mixed with the algae. ... The U.S. Park Police arrested Mr. Hearn shortly after, accusing him of destroying government property, a crime that can carry up to a 10-year prison sentence. Mr. Hearn denies the charge. ... "I was just a curious, concerned citizen," he said in an interview. "I guess I was there at the wrong place, wrong time."

The administration has not released the names of others accused of vandalizing the pool, a crime that Mr. Trump said on Saturday could lead to "years in jail." In a later post, he said without evidence that vandals had "poured corrosive and destructive chemicals into the Pool." {snip} Mr. Hearn, of Bethesda, Md., said that he was on a 50-mile bike ride before stopping at the pool, and that Park Police officers detained him for more than four hours on Friday at a facility south of the National Mall without allowing a phone call. They also did not say more about why he had been arrested, he added. The White House and Park Police did not respond to requests for comment.

Until his retirement 18 months ago, Mr. Hearn ran a company selling special materials for building canoes. That, he said, made him particularly interested in the materials contractors had used before the paint at the base of the pool began peeling. ... Mr. Hearn said that he had already received offers of pro bono representation following his arrest. ... "I'm getting a lot of support from my community," he added.

...whose conscience was surgically removed at birth, blithely steamrolls innocent citizens, calling them "vandals" for blinking the wrong way at yet another of his monumental fuck-ups.
Ah, but Mr. Hearn has more integrity in his bellybutton lint than the Orange Reptile has ever had, so Trump's goons grabbed a tiger by the tail with that ill-advised arrest on totally trumped up charges. Mr. Hearn's attorneys will eat their lunch in court, and they'll wish they were never born before the defense is done chopping them into chum – metaphorically speaking, of course, heh, heh, heh – and serving them up as a banquet to the bottom feeders in the Potomac.
Oh, and please explain how "vandals" introduced rapidly spreading algae into the dark blue Reflecting Pool that no longer reflects anything but Trump's complete incompetence.

7. Trump will now find a way to grift himself more money on maybe millions in "repairs" to address the "vandalism." (n/t)

once it's been drained and fixed and refilled, they'll have to post a 24-7 guard around it to protect it from liberal vandals. Amirite?

12. MaddowBlog-Scrambling to avoid blame for Reflecting Pool fiasco, Trump's defense turns farcical
Tue Jun 23, 2026, 11:10 AM

The debacle has become a metaphor of sorts, but not the one the president had in mind.

For Trump, the Reflecting Pool was supposed to be a totemic success story, demonstrating that his unique approach to problem-solving is fundamentally superior to his predecessors’.

This one project would serve as a metaphor for how awesome his awesomeness is.

There is a degree of irony surrounding Donald Trump’s Reflecting Pool fiasco. For months, the president obsessed over the renovation project, framing it as a metaphor for how awesome his awesomeness is: The Republican would tackle a lingering problem that vexed previous administrations, while delivering impressive results quickly and cheaply.....

With this in mind, the president came to realize in recent days that he needed an excuse — or preferably villains who could shoulder the blame for his own failures.

To that end, he began assuring the public over the weekend that he had succeeded beautifully, but that “vandals” intervened and ruined his triumph. At an unrelated White House event on Monday afternoon, the president went further, alleging nefarious criminals — some armed with “probably a box cutter or a knife of some kind” — attacked the Reflecting Pool with fertilizer and “did something to create the algae.”

The administration said five people were arrested on charges of vandalism, though without more information, it’s nearly impossible to say whether these people actually did anything wrong or whether they were charged as part of an inherently political exercise.

As is usually the case with Trump’s more outlandish claims, he has provided no evidence. At his Oval Office event on Monday afternoon, the president suggested the evidence exists, but he’s not yet prepared to share it.

Trump: I can't help it if somebody goes in with a knife and starts hacking it up. Uh... and we also have pictures of it.

Q: Can you release the photos?

Trump: At the right time you'll see it. You'll see it in court.

FactPost (@factpostnews.bsky.social) 2026-06-22T20:41:36.507704516Z

......For good measure, the president also decided to whine about Barack Obama as part of the same clumsy presentation, though it wasn’t altogether clear why.

O'KEEFE: You said the guy was gonna do the reflecting poll in a week for about a million dollars. It's been two months and .5 million

TRUMP: Are you ready? Barack Hussein Obama

Indeed, one of the most amazing things about this story is the number of familiar boxes it checks. Trump fails to deliver on bold promises? Check. He relies on no-bid contracts and a rushed process that fell apart? Check. He concocts weird theories about his perceived enemies? Check. He desperately spins a fantastical tale with evolving details in the hopes of avoiding blame for his own failure? Check. His aligned prosecutors scramble to help justify his dubious claims with equally dubious charges? Check.
