Sen. Lindsey Graham: "Let's try a diplomatic solution. I think it's going to fail."

Source: CBS News

Updated on: June 21, 2026 / 12:22 PM EDT

Washington — GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said Sunday he expects the U.S.'s attempts to reach a diplomatic solution with Iran to fail, though he noted that he would "rather try diplomacy than take it off the table."

"Let's try a diplomatic solution. I think it's going to fail. What happens next?" Graham said on "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan."

Vice President JD Vance and other U.S. negotiators are meeting with Iranian officials in Switzerland on Sunday, as the clock starts on a 60-day negotiating period following the two countries' signing of a memorandum of understanding last week. But already, conflict between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah has endangered the U.S.-Iran ceasefire. Iran said Saturday that the Strait of Hormuz will be closed again after it accused the U.S. and Israel of violating the agreement.

Graham, who said he spent four and a half hours with the president on Friday, outlined that if a deal fails, he expects "President Trump is going to take the Strait of Hormuz over by force." "The United States will control the Strait of Hormuz, we'll charge a fee for all those who go through to pay for the operation, and we're going to expand the Abraham Accords in calendar year 2026," Graham said. Graham added, "if Iran contests control of the Strait of Hormuz by the United States, we will obliterate them."

You've already "obliterated" them multiple times in the past year.

Time to exit stage right!

Let me guess, your conversation involved a lot of exhortations of "Watch This Drive!" and "MULLIGAN!", Lindsey?

IQ47 is doing everything in his power to pin his own abject Iran failures on JD Vance (and Bibi and Witkoff and Jared ... can anyone see the connection there?), sending his lackeys like Leningrad Lindsey onto the airwaves to undermine him, just as the talks are beginning.

Trump's obsessive need to avoid taking responsibility for any sort of personal failure is a direct result of his crippling case of narcissistic personality disorder. Far from the references to where the buck stops, Clowny McDollhand's should have a sign reading "IT'S NOT MY FAULT SO STOP SAYING THAT!" on his desk.

Lindsey, you are prostrating yourself before the most pathetic sniveling little man-baby that has ever walked the earth. Which makes you even more of one, frankly.

My senator .. ugh. I'm working hard for our Democratic candidate, Annie Andrews, to retire Graham-Cracker for good.

And are we supposed to be impressed that Lindsey spent 4.5 hours of Friday with his nose and tongue glued to Trump's ass? If I were Lindsey, I wouldn't be bragging about it.

On the other hand, the longer Lindsey stays on the sinking SS Trump, the better chance Annie Andrews has of beating him.

Sequence:

1. You declare war on Iran, take out their leader, and expect the country to bow down to the US within days.

2. Iran says . . . no way, and puts up a very effective fight.

3. The US struggles to make the 'few days of war, tops' happen.

4. Now 'diplomacy with non-functional threats' is being discussed?

My suggestion:

A. The US pulls all interests out of the Middle East, including support for Israel.

B. Trump gets bundled up and sent off to a war crimes tribunal at The Hague.

I vote for A and B:

A. The US pulls all interests out of the Middle East, including support for Israel.

B. Trump gets bundled up and sent off to a war crimes tribunal at The Hague.

And then...

C: Why does ANYBODY still bother listening to Lindsey Graham? Seems like all the Republicans have on their team anymore are attention whores (who love to hear themselves talk, and fully expect YOU to feel the same way).
