Democrats made abortion personal; Trump had no answer

What is so beautiful about a child having to carry her parent’s child?

This question prompted gasps from the floor of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago and likely a similar reaction from the millions of Americans who watched Vice President Kamala Harris’ nominating convention on the opening night.

It came from a courageous Kentucky woman named Hadley Duvall, who was raped and impregnated by her stepfather when she was 12 years old. And it was directed at former President Donald Trump, who has called the country’s patchwork of abortion laws, some very draconian, “a beautiful thing to watch.”

Trump, of course, has no answer for Duvall’s searing question, variations of which could be asked by the one-third of American women of reproductive age (15-49) who live in states with near-total abortion bans. And Democrats, in showcasing deeply personal abortion stories like Duvall’s, have effectively painted Trump and his GOP allies as glib, dismissive and callous. In clinging to the states’ rights argument around abortion, Trump has left decisions about the basic human rights of 1 in 3 American women to the whims of voters.

1. The Harris campaign did a great job of making abortion about medical care and emotional will being.

Republicans have wrongly defined abortion as birth control for promiscuous women who want sex with no consequences. Democrats changed the narrative to healthcare for women.

2. I really liked that Gov Andy was the politician who spoke before the women

who told those incredibly sad stories. Kentucky, for all its redness, passed a resolution supporting right to choose.

3. Hadley Duvall had a simple but highly effective commercial for Gov. Beshear.

I think that it was one of the factors that helped him get reelected. His opponent was an extreme pro-birther.

Those of us in Kentucky and the surrounding states showing Kentucky election commercials last year were not surprised by her appearance. She made us gasp about a year ago!

5. I had heard about it from my cousin in KY. (She was in the State House for 3 terms

back when he was AG.) She did make an impression on me at the convention.

I grew up in KY-1 (Gomer Comer's district) and we sent so many good Democrats to Congress!!! Makes me sad to see that doofus.

What part of KY are you from? I grew up just north of Clarksville TN barely inside the state line

6. I'm not from Kentucky.

I live near Huntington, West Virginia, where Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia meet. The Huntington television stations cover far eastern Kentucky, so we get their election ads. And Ohio's. And West Virginia's. I hate election season! The airwaves are flooded and you can hardly enjoy a college football game in peace!

4. I remember when "states' rights" was the catchphrase of Southern bigots pining for the good old days...

…when Black people knew their place, and not so subtly pining for the days when Black people were slaves.

The longer this madness against the Constitutional and human rights of women goes on, the more echoes of human slavery reappear. “States’ rights” my rosy Irish ass.

7. I was taught that the Civil War was fought over "states rights" back in the late 1950s, growing up in Texas.

Slavery was downplayed, I never heard of the heroism of black women like Sojourner Truth. My mother took me to see a revival of "Gone With the Wind," and she cried during scenes depicting Southern bravery and loss of life. I rode on segregated buses where black people were directed to sit in the back, on little signs with arrows. And, of course, there were no black students in my schools.
