Trump delivers a piece de resistance in defense of the English language. Bravo!

Last edited Mon Mar 17, 2025, 07:12 PM - Edit history (7)

I am thrilled that President Donald Trump has so courageously stood up for the English language here in the United States.

For the first time in our history, an American president has declared by executive order that English is the official language in the United States. The move came after what Trump said has been an onslaught of immigrants bringing their foreign languages to our shores.

“We have languages coming into our country,” Trump explained. “These are languages — it’s the craziest thing — they have languages that nobody in this country has ever heard of. It’s a horrible thing.”

Finally, we have a president with cojones who will not take a laissez-faire attitude when it comes to standing up for our English language from all these personae non gratae.

No longer will they have carte blanche to offend us with their foreign words, coming here en masse, like a human blitzkrieg, with their modus operandi of disrespecting English.

Where do you find syntax guidelines for DU?

If I wanted to increase the font for some text in the body do you know how I would do that?

Thanks.

There was a DUer who was very good at being able to get formatting into DU, but I don't think they've posted for some time, and I can't remember their exact name now (something along the lines of starting with an 's' and ending in a '7' or '8', I vaguely feel).

I think it's possible that with the latest update to DU, some of the workarounds that used to work don't any more. I can't find anything for font size.

Demagogues like Trump love to use it every time they need to stir up a little nativist hatred. Trump's recent ramblings are similar to something President Roosevelt wrote in 1907: "We have room for but one language in this country, and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans, of American nationality, and not as dwellers in a polyglot boarding house."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_words_from_Indigenous_languages_of_the_Americas since English is, after all, the language of disease-bearing immigrants.

Note that "caucus" is on that list.

ETA: "Muskrat", the South African Nazi's favorite nom de net, is also on the list.

that when Americans visit foreign countries, they feel so "entitled" that they expect all of the country's people to speak English........LOL

U.S. airline pilots are so fortunate that the Airport Towers in every country speak english.........And that the pilots in every other country have to learn English just to do their jobs.....

Caligula Delenda est!

Emperor Caligula and his horse Incitatus
https://www.democraticunderground.com/100220007444

The tale of Caligula’s horse, Incitatus, being appointed as a senator is one of the most outlandish anecdotes about the emperor’s supposed madness. Incitatus was not just any horse; by all accounts, Caligula lavished him with luxuries typically reserved for Rome’s elite. The horse lived in a marble stable, with an ivory manger, and was the recipient of jewelry and other decadent trappings of wealth. The story goes that Caligula was so enamored with Incitatus that he intended to make a farce of the senatorial proceedings by raising his horse to the high office of a consul.
