Have lawmakers forgotten they have constituents?
No politician will ever admit they have zero interest in hearing what their constituents have to say. But from Washington, D.C., to Wichita, Kan., elected officials are cancelling meetings with constituents and systematically undermining citizen-led ballot initiatives; the one tool the public has to make change when elected officials wont listen.
It is profoundly hypocritical; and dangerously shortsighted. In these bitterly polarized times, legislators should be finding ways to listen more to an angry public, not less.
The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, Thomas Jefferson explained to the citizens of South Carolina in 1801, and to protect its free expression should be our first object.
But today many elected officials seem eager slink away from their own constituents.

(54,878 posts)They only need consent of the people on one day every 2, 4, or 6 years.
Through various forms of voter suppression, they don't need a real majority, and they only need to convince enough people on one particular day. They know with enough money and free help from a friendly media, they can convince millions to vote against their own interests.
And if they are pissed on any given non-election day, they don't care. They can always give them different bullshit for the next election.

(2,130 posts)It appears their only job is to say "they support Trump's agenda". Or they just repeat talking points.
Even though I find several of them abhorrent, I did not realize so many of them are so totally dysfunctional. They really need to resign.
(I suggest we go after R politicians like this.)
