The latter I am especially aware of since in Santa Fe I am just at the end of a three day winter storm. I didn't lose electricity myself, and my heat and hot water are from gas, but still. Indoor heat.

AC in summer is as important as heat in winter in colder climates.

I also spent my first three summers in the DC area without AC. My son who currently lives there is an awe that I survived that. It wasn't easy.

But I agree with those pointing out plumbing too. (And I'm assuming if you have heat, you have electricity).

I could live with an outhouse, wood stove, icebox and so on. But washing clothes by hand is a real pain in the rear!
