My wife's in surgery. I hate the silence in the waiting room.

Last edited Fri Apr 18, 2025, 11:38 AM - Edit history (1)

Update: The doctor called. She's in recovery. The procedure went well and was sucessful.

Trying to read to keep my mind off it. The doctor is well rated and the procedure as heart procedures go is low risk. Still I'm really stressed. We're an hour into it according to the progress monitor.

I don't want to turn the damn TV on. It would make me crazy.

The time in the waiting room is awful. I’m sending all good vibes to your wife and a big ((HUG)) to you as you are waiting to hear from the doctor. I know it will all be good but that doesn’t make the wait any easier. Let us know when you hear!!!

A little late for best wishes for the procedure, but I can still wish you both a good recovery.

Several years ago, my mom had her heart stopped and restarted to try to bring her afib under control. It's probably the lowest-risk cardiac procedure you can get, but just the thought was anxiety-inducing -- anything concerning the heart is, whatever the doctors say, so I can sympathize. (She came out of it fine, but still with afib.)

...for quite some time. They've been managed with propranolol, but apparently with age, the drug loses effectiveness.

Apparently it's a familial genetic thing with her mother and uncles, an extra node.

We figured we'd deal with it before the country collapses which it seems to be doing.

cardiologist seems to think it's not a good idea at her age (88). She just had the "jumper start", which sometimes resets the rhythm. She relies on metoprolol, which is not as strong, but more selective, than propranolol. (Plus Xarelto to avoid clots, plus levothyroxin to offset the side effects of Xarelto ...)

Lots of luck to both of you. Mom's lived with her condition for years now, but no one has ever said her condition was genetic, so maybe not as reassuring as we'd like.
