Given the way that some dogs can sense a seizure coming on or even scent out tumors, there have to be all sorts of chemical signals issued by a person in actual physical distress. These animals have been by our sides for millennia; they can pick up physical and behavioral cues to an uncanny degree.
Happy to recommend The Wolf in the Parlor: How the Dog Came to Share Your Brain, by Jon Franklin. The author writes about how humans and canines essentially evolved together. Very educational and enjoyable read.
