Here in central Pa. we can get up to 18 inches of snow Saturday night until Monday morning. I have a lightbulb from a trouble light keeping my snowblower warm in my unheated garage. I started it up yesterday. It's supposed to get -5 degrees tonight.
I feel for the people in Texas and surrounding states. I think it was about 25 years ago when I was working, we had to drive from Houston to Muskogee. It was the day after an ice/snowstorm, not nearly as bad as what they are calling for. The next morning while driving, we counted over 100 vehicles off the road in snow banks and ditches. One small truck was stuck atop the cement lane divider. The people in Texas who plowed the snow didn't have a clue, or didn't have the right equipment. They left piles of snow in the middle of 2 lane traffic.
The trick to driving on ice is, stay home, I don't care what kind of tires you have. If it's snow, the trick is, slow down.
I locked my outdoor cat in the garage in his heated cat house. He is my buddy who had a bad corneal ulcer in one eye, after 2 1/2 months the vet found an antibiotic that allowed him to keep his eye.
Also, years ago I bought a 30,000 BTU gas heater that I put in my basement that can heat the house enough to keep everything from freezing, just from the pilot light.
Once Again - Stay Safe I need you people here to argue with me.

(1,240 posts)Terrible storm to affect over one-third of the nation. Make sure you're prepared and stocked to last through the storm and more.
An if anyone is headed to Cancun, please say Hi to Ted Cruz.

(33,290 posts)Last weekend the prediction was for up to 20 inches of snow here this weekend. Over the week, it has changed to a little bit of snow and a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain. Never thought I'd hope for sleet, but I'll take it over freezing rain. It only takes 1/4-1/2" of ice on trees or power lines to make them start coming down. Then the power goes out. And stays out for several days--at least--when millions are without power.
I do have a gas fireplace which will light from batteries when the power is out. Tested it yesterday. I have a gas cook top. Coffee, soup, anything I can cook on a gas burner will work. My garage will become my fridge if the power goes because the high temps next week won't get out of the 30's and we may have a couple of nights of single digit lows. I have a battery operated cell phone charger and a battery operated reading light so I can read at night--and not by candlelight. So, I guess I'm ready.
I suppose I can console myself that it will just be ice making my life uncomfortable and not ICE threatening my life!

(17,465 posts)I will be sitting my bootie at home. I always think it is SO stupid when employers around here absolutely insist that non-essential personnel report for work on days with dangerous wintry mix. There are tons of accidents, and those same employees wind up missing work down the road when they are trying to deal with their vehicle repair.
My motto is: stay off the roads and let the first responders have all the room they need.
Everyone stay safe and warm!!!!
