When I was a kid my mom made homemade root beer

She stored it in the pantry. One very cold night we were awake from explosions in the pantry.
The root beer had frozen and was exploding.(it was a rental and the pantry was on an outside wall)

Very simple; pine needles, sugar and water. A Sprite-like flavor, very refreshing.

I may try that. Sounds like the lavender soda/water I made. ( which is also very nice in a bath for rashes, I used it when I had shingles. Stopped the itch and helped the sores drain a d heal).

5 times more than V-C. You. can use any needles in the pine family except ponderosa. Stay away from Yews and other ornamentals, they are not in the pine family. I like white pines. Find some needles in a wild area, no pesticides. I use glass bottles with a stopper/wire bales, mason jars will also work.

One incredibly hot July night about 10 o'clock things started exploding gown in our basement where he had stored the beer and root beer.

This was during the Cold War and there were always rumors of the Russians attacking us. So when we heard the popping we thought we were under attack.

Eventually we worked our way to the basement where we saw our dad sitting on the stairs crying over spilt beer.
