Anode to Electricity

Oh, tiny electrons, so fast and so free,
Do not desert me in my hour of need!
The heat is off, the stove is too; a 13 degree
Day is no time to secede!

I have no phone, nor any water,
No hope of hot coffee, and lunch will be chilled.
I cannot call or text or email unless the internet gets hotter.
This outage was anticipated, but totally unwilled.

Of our climate a friend once inquired:
“It’s a cold mutha up there, isn't it?”
To him I reply: “You’re singin’ with the choir,
In the depths of winter, cold as a witch’s tit!”

I’ve been carefully trickling water for weeks.
Will my prudence be mocked when my water pipe freezes?
And quietly, inexorably, sprouts many leaks?
This outage the road to housekeeping hell greases.

“O frabjous Day! Callooh! Callay!”
Electrons are racing; the heater is running!
My pipe may survive ro flow all day!
Hot coffee is bracing, the the relief is stunning!

So here’s to the men and women of NYSEG, *
Who spend all their summers trimming tree limbs.
So efficient are they that we all may beg
With confidence that our lives be undimmed.

* New York State Electric and Gas, famous for high rates and prompt service.
