I've followed DU since forever .

I would like to comment, but IT’S IN THE WRONG FORUM!!!

I’m an old man, and it seems dangerous and stupid to post.

I try to post in the right forum, but if I don’t - and I don’t mean to knock the earth off its axis, jeeze, I messed up. And it takes 8 seconds for someone to drag me.

I hate that I hate posting on DU.

I posted about an experience I had in cherry-red north Texas in which my local Goodyear dealer held a knife to my throat because I had the audacity to mention my intent to vote for Barack Obama. Within minutes, the posse had accused me of lying and averred that the incident had never occurred. Some of the replies were quite personal and offensive, as I recall. So, I have greatly reduced my presence on this board because like you, I don't feel welcome here. Over fifty-five years of voting Democratic, supporting Democratic candidates across the nation, and years of experience in local and national politics mean nothing to these people. (Did I mention that I have a close relative who worked in the Johnson White House?) I will continue to support DU in my meager way, as I have for over twenty years, but I have no interest in offering my perspective. DU remains a great source for breaking news and opinion, but fuck that posse that tries to dehumanize you.

Sometimes the first reply can ruin what might have been a great post. The reply may be innocent and well intended, but you may feel like the only good choice is to delete the original post. It happens.

Someone posted an article from Scientific American in the Science forum.

I read the article, finding it quite fascinating, and composed a response using Windows notepad. I had a few outside sources of my own, and I checked my spelling to be sure I was correct, and all in all probably spent a good 20 minutes on that post. Maybe more.

Big surprise! My proposed post was all for nothing because a post from Scientific American was considered inappropriate for the Science forum! It was deleted!

Now you tell me how an article from Scientific American is not scientific.

I sent the poster a DM thanking him for bringing attention to the article and also I expressed regret that it had been deleted for being off topic. This poster responded by saying he was a bit befuddled by an article from Scientific American being judged off topic.

Moral of the story: we’re all just people here and people make mistakes.

Always remember it when you are dealing with the internet. You could be in the most wonderful site ever created, filled with valuable information and content.

But, you will not escape that equation. Even here.

I will admit that's it's frustrating that political threads show up in the Lounge and it happens on the daily, sometimes multiple times a day. I simply give a friendly reminder that this is the Lounge. Most of the time I automatically trash them.

We do have many members here that come across as perfect and we all know better.

There's a tool on DU that's makes DU much more pleasant called an ignore list. It's at your disposal if you ever need it.
