Its inspiration was the Korean War. The Kingston Trio later stole Adams song changing some words to make it a love ballad.

A different Portland Town originated with Schooner Fare, a Portland, Maine trio. This one is about coming home.

I just spent 2 days in KCK visited 3 museums and camped to the north. (TWA museum). (Miniatures and toys museum, saw an article in fine woodworking 35 yrs. ago about it.) (A book found in the whitewater WI. library took me to the Arabia Steam boat museum.)

Chula Vista is the second largest city in San Diego County, Ca. This song was made a local favorite by a Charlie and Harrigan, a pair of radio DJs who provided comedy with rock-n-roll music, in the San Diego area in the 1970s.

There are bronze statues of the Eagles, and a mural on the side of the brick building of the Flatboard slowing down to take a look..... In the middle where the streets come together there is a large Route 66 highway sign. It's a neat spot

If you learn a little bit of background, it's funny to me -- originally, Billy Joel tried to write this about Levittown. He just couldn't make it interesting, so it was put on a back burner and came back as Allentown.

Now as one who grew up on Long Island, I find this story hysterical!

We had two 45s from the same company -- one had "The Alphabet Song" and "Rattlesnake" -- kids' songs -- and the other had "Waterloo" and "Battle of New Orleans", not exactly for kids(!) but we did learn who "John Bull" is. Don't remember who the singer(s) were.
