The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI was gone for three months.
I broke my leg and had to go to a rehab center. I got back home a few days ago. When I walked through the door, my cat looked at me, turned around, and went into another room. I was so hurt! He was well cared for while I was gone with people giving him treats and toys and undivided attention. I guess I understand his disappointment, but it still hurts. He was acting like an angry teenager. Has anybody else been dissed by their cat?

(1,188 posts)Some cats will take your absence personally, as tho you deliberately and callously abandoned them. Cats are forgiving tho. So profess your "guilt" (no excuses!) and treat him with extra kindness. Congratulations on graduating from rehab!

(1,824 posts)I was gone for two weeks. When I got home my kitty looked at me, gave me the stink eye, and walked away. She ignored me for a couple of days and then things went back to normal.
Fourteen years later, we're still friends.

(757 posts)We all know cats can be fickle and get a tude.
Itll come around soon and love you back.
A dog would never reject you like this though.
Glad youre doing better!

(26,108 posts)He was pissed at us for leaving him. It would take 3 days, then he'd go back to his usual super friendly and cuddly boy. His mother was the opposite. She would not leave our sides when we returned.

(12,028 posts)You most likely smell "off" due to a scent change.
There was a routine disruption and this threw off his "security".
Any new items brought into a home and can cause uncertainly and stress as well.
Give your cat a few days. Wear clothing or a blanket that you left at home that contains your "home" scent. Give your cat some space. He'll be back to his usual self in a few days.
Happy reuniting, Zanana.

(194 posts)Their noses are really sensitive. If you return home with some scent of the rehab, the cat may find it strange or even unpleasant. Agree with the suggestion of clothing or laundry or products that smell more like home. Give it a day or so...

(701 posts)because no matter how long we were gone, we didn't get the cold-shoulder punishment.
Miss that instant forgiveness now that the cat sitter is no longer cat sitting.
Congratulations on graduating rehab and getting home.

(11,200 posts)home until March 12th (hospital stay with 2 surgeries and time spent at a skilled nursing facility for rehab}. I came home with a wheelchair and a walker, It took some time for my cat to get adjusted to them. He actually claimed the wheelchair the other night for a nap. I have two more weeks of home health physical therapy and need to talk to my surgeon about getting set up for out patient PT,
The big news for me today is that my surgeon's office has told me that I can now drive. I am now using both the walker and a cane with my goal to walk into July appointment using the cane. I am almost 4 months post op and that it will take a year for the healing to take place. I really messed up my leg.

(29,157 posts)but my dogs have always peee all over me when I've been away for more than three days. Seems to be their breaking point. 3 days. No advice on cats, but I'm sure he'll come around eventually?
I'm a human, glad you're home as I'm sure you are!

(1,741 posts)My vet said it was that we smelled differently than our cats were accustomed having us smell.
We had multiple cats and they treated each other with a growl when they had been to the vet.
When you start to smell like your home surroundings again, your cat will come around.
I'm sorry your feelings were hurt, but it isn't you, it's the smell of where you were.

Heal quickly! Maybe try to get your kitty to purr on top of the break. That will help it heal. (At least that's what I've read.)

(3,063 posts)It must be so good to be back home!
Whenever I come home from leaving my cats for a couple of days, as soon as I walked in the door, they come downstairs, see that it's me and go running back upstairs! When I bring them home after boarding them, they take off running as soon as I let him out of their carriers and ignore me for hours.
Whenever I picked up my previous cat, Boots, from boarding, she would cling to the worker as if she were terrified of me. It ripped my heart out every time. As soon as we got home, she would give me the cold shoulder and after I had been properly chastised, she would cling to me for about a week before everything went back to normal.
Every cat is different but I suspect your cat will come around before long. Good luck!

(3,455 posts)I've had as many as 5 cats at a time. They live by their own terms.
I just had a hip replaced and was sleeping in the living room for a few days. When I decided to get back into bed the first night, both of them were curled up literally in the middle of the bed. They always slept on the bed, but had their "spots", Marilyn at my head, Monroe at my feet. Of course, they refused to move. I had to do a work around for a couple of nights.
He'll come around when it's time to eat. Alternatively, at 3 in the morning when he wants to get scratched.
