(5,571 posts)...the Reagan presidential library in Simi Valley maybe 30 years ago.
The library director was a Democrat, fwiw.
He took me into a very large storage area, closed off to the general public, which was lined with rows of very large floor to ceiling metal shelves.
The shelves were loaded with all sorts of things that had been gifted to Ronnie during his reign of error.
One item was the "world's largest" ball of twine, maybe 6 to 8 feet in diameter.
That was the most memorable thing I saw there.

(5,571 posts)...to Reagan, or any President, had to be, by law, documented and stored in their prez library.
That included the giant ball of twine.
I did see several very elaborately decorated, hand-tooled leather horse saddles that had been presented to Saint Ronnie, which he could not actually use, at least after he had left office.
No prez could personally keep anything gifted them during their term(s) of office. All such gifts belonged to the People of the U.S. and were not the personal property of any prez.
I'm sure that will be another established protocol that preznit Donnie dipshit violates if he ever has the chance.

(34,197 posts)I thought nothing could be more spectacular.
Then I saw the Grand Canyon.
Unlike GNP, I could see the whole enchilada.
I've seen it from the south and north rims.
It think it is the 'world's best' !

(27,992 posts)When I first got there (4 hour stay, bus from Flagstaff)....
Believe it or not it was.....
disappointing.
Now, how could that be?!!
Well... around noonish time the ground I walked on was a pale beige gray. The first set of lower rock were a faded red.
Then.....
.
The canyon rock formations of layered "stripes" were a mix of very pale blue, cobalt blue, darker blue, and a reddish purple. Almost no shadows.
It looked very "flat*. Like looking almost at a museum's painted 2-D diorama through a plate glass window. And the colors were not what l was expecting at all!
Wth?!
Went to the gift shop. Cactus jam! Didn't buy. Then kept walking around.
Finally , around 3PM with an hour to go....
the sun got angled enough to bring out the shadows and the warm colors: pale yellow, oranges, red-orange, reds, and red browns; we are all familiar with from photos!
Phew! Well, there you are!
Wonderful. Magnificent!! 🥰

Mt Graham International Observatory
Im kind of a geek, so this was a full-blown nerdgasm when we got the behind the scenes tour.
Although, I understand theres an even larger one nearing completion in Chile.
These people can tell if theres water on planet in a star system in another galaxy.
From the outside, theres a 4 story building on top of a 3 story building. The upper one houses the telescope. And is capable of rotating 460 degrees.
My day job gets me in some weird places.
Ptah
(34,197 posts)I spent several years working for Kitt Peak, and I appreciate that telescope as an amazing accomplishment.
The mirrors were made under the University of Arizona football stadium.
And the red squirrel almost defeated the whole project!

(82,808 posts)It's shaped just like a basket, with handles & all.
I laughed so hard when I saw it, I had teara running down my cheeks.
The company is now out of business. Apparently their baskets were quite expensive...
Here is a news story on this building:
