A new bird painting - a shrike with its impaled prey.

Shrikes are smallish, robin-sized birds that are carnivorous like raptors, but they are passerine birds that lack talons. So they kill their prey like a cat does - with a neck bite - then impale it on a thorn so they can eat it without having to hold onto it with their little feet. Behold, Vlad the Shrike:

4. This is stunningly, hauntingly beautiful, Ocelot II.

The shrike’s ebony mask and bill are quite striking, in more ways than one as your painting makes so pellucidly clear, to borrow a phrase from Malaise.

Had a shrike nest last year in the park near my house. I read up on them and was shocked. Clever little birds.
