Related: About this forumIn Memoriam for Gary "Mani" Mounfield. 11/16/62 - 11/20/25.
Mani was bass player for The Stone Roses, an emerging British band of the mid '80s. He died at home of a seizure Thursday at 63. his wife died of cancer in 2023 so their 12 year old twin daughters are now orphans.
I confess I have no idea who The Stone Roses were, but I do know the band he joined after they broke up in 1997..
Mani co-wrote the bass heavy "Kowalski" with Primal Scream. The video features cut scenes from the 1971 movie "Vanishing Point" and begins with a car heist by Kate Moss and Devon Aoki.
Mounfield also Heisted part of the baseline from "Get Off Your Ass And Jam" by Funkadelic but applies his style in this instrumental.:

(59,119 posts)self-titled first album has been one of my favorite albums for decades, and I also liked the Seahorses, the band Roses guitarist John Squire formed after the Roses broke up. I've posted both Roses and Seahorses music here.
The Stone Roses had a huge impact, including inspiring Oasis, whom they became friends with, starting when the Roses were working on their long-delayed second album near a studio where Oasis were working on their first.
I don't know if you saw the two threads I posted for Mani, the first in LBN - https://www.democraticunderground.com/10143568733 - with more info about Mani in the replies, including links to more articles.
I posted the same OP here in MA - https://www.democraticunderground.com/1034154886 - and after seeing no responses, I posted a reply with the Accolades section from the Wikipedia article on that first Roses album, to try to make people here aware of just how important the Roses were, how highly regarded that album was and still is.
I was just looking at part of a one-hour documentary on the first Oasis album tonight, and Mani's in it. At about 1:10, he says the debut album from Oasis "is probably the second best debut album of all time - next to mine" (meaning the Stone Roses debut). But Oasis had what was at the time the fastest selling debut album ever. Anyway, there are some other entertaining bits with Mani in here:
Oasis honored him tonight in Sao Paulo, Brazil, during the next-to-last gig of their 5-month reunion tour, dedicating Live Forever to him. You'll see Mani's face on the screen about 4 minutes in. And as Live Forever ends, Liam dedicates the next song - Rock 'n' Roll Star - to Mani as well.

(20,310 posts)So I went to Youtube for samples of the Stone Roses catalogue thinking I may be more familiar with them than I remember. Nope. Our musical circles never met and I only know of Oasis because they were hard to ignore.
Primal Scream on the other hand pulled me in with the album "Riot City Blues". Mani's death led to my looking back at that CD and I'm going to post the leading single later.
Thanx for the education.

(59,119 posts)I loved the Stone Roses' debut album the first time I heard it, have never grown tired of it. Not familiar with Primal Scream, but I'm looking forward to what you'll post.
This is my favorite Roses song:

(20,310 posts)I can hear the similarities with Oasis, that's for sure.
When Mani hooked up with Primal Scream he said there were only three bands he wanted to join, Primal Scream being one of them. The other two were Stone Temple Pilots and Oasis. Any of those band should have welcomed him. Great talent on the bass, and I imagine the other instruments he purports to play.

The Observer Music Monthly poll of 100 musicians and critics voted the album ahead of The Beatles' Revolver (1966).
The Clash's London Calling and Van Morrison's Astral Weeks took third and fourth place.
The Beatles and David Bowie led the list, both with five albums in the top 100 list.
The top ten list did not feature Radiohead's OK Computer (24)- consistently ranked the greatest of British album in many lists - nor Oasis' debut Definitely Maybe (19).
Other perennials ignored in the top ten included The Smiths' The Queen is Dead (37) and Primal Scream's Screamadelica (68).
