I saw them in 82(?) and Pete didn't break anything.
Roger Daltry put his mic stand though a speaker. I found out later that the speaker was malfunctioning so Daltry "fixed" it.

I had to reply to that comment. I didn't see it. I'll be using that in the future
I was very disappointed when they played in front of a massive global audience at Super Bowl in 2010 and Townsend couldn't be bothered to deliver his signature closing move. I felt rather insulted actually, but that seems to have been Pete's goal in those days.
Nothing says "we don't do encores" like destroying the instruments.
