He was quite the blues purist at that point, and hated the more commercial direction.

I don't think the cover by Humble Pie is very commercial. But anyway. Clapton is a good musician and made many commercial hits in the end, didn't he? I'd say just about everything by Derrick and the Dominos was commercial.

He got over the blues purism pretty quickly.
Cream was never a blues band. Even the blues tunes they did were fairly tight & glossy.
I've always guessed that he had more personality clashes with Relf than was advertised.
