Good turnout. 7 performers plus the host, and I left with around an hour to go. So, I don't know if more showed up or the recycled.
I was 5th, so I heard 4 before me (not counting the host) and one after.
One if them (woman in her mid 50s who followed me) was really good. Excellent voice, good delivery & pretty good on guitar.
Two others were good, too. Just not as good as the woman I mentioned. Plus, one of them (also a woman) did sings that are not my taste. Harder to judge objectively.
2 were just ok, but nothing to note.
The lady who was going on when I left fancies herself a stand-up comic. I've heard her before and don't think she's funny. Nice, just not funny.
I played just three songs:
Am I Blue by Billie Holiday. I did it in jazz style (26 different chords) with a bossa nova feel.
Sara, Smile by Hall & Oates. For some reason more than half of my falsetto has come back and I couldn't do the song without it.
I Saw The Light by Todd Rundgren. Played it pretty straight, though a little slower. First time I ever played it on guitar! But, I've played in a few hundred times on piano, so pulling it off was no great feat.
Nice bunch of people. They do it monthly.
I might take a piano next time, if I can find my good stand.

(72,124 posts)Actually twice a month, but the other one is on a Wednesday night and starts 3 hours later.
I'm playing the old man card & not going to that one!
Yeah, I wouldn't either.

(55,127 posts)Wonderful choice of songs. I'm trying to imagine Am I Blue arranged like that - in jazz style (26 different chords) with a bossa nova feel. Did you ever hear an arrangement like that, or did you come up with it?
It's great that the people there are nice, and you could go to this open mic once a month. Is the club close to your home?

(72,124 posts)I started messing around with it using a more 1930s torch song rhythm.
One day, I just started changing up the rhythm to do something different while I was trying to get the chord changes to muscle memory. I started thinking about Tommy Bolin's "Savannah Woman". I adopted that feel and was convinced it was right!
It's a little more fun to sing that way, because I can lag the beat on some lines.
Ideally I would capo one or 2 frets up, but the chords are complicated enough without losing my sight markers!
I'll go back. They seemed excited about me bringing a piano.

Since you were inspired in part by Savannah Woman:

(72,124 posts)Over time, I had more thane stand, until I settled on the Ultimate Apex stand.
Perfect stand for a keyboardist that needs to be at the front of the stage.
Once I only need 2 keyboards (one with 88 keys and weighted escapement action; the other with 73 keys & synth action) and the other 4 modules MIDI connected, it was the perfect stand.
It looks like this. (Viewed from an audience POV)
