Did you know that there are fire towers that you can rent for a vacation stay? A friend did this some time ago out west and loved it. You have to haul your food and supplies up the stairs and the building sways in the wind but it's beautiful and cheap.

This photo is of a working lookout tower that I staff during fire season .. 24/7, all summer long. I've been doing various lookouts since 2009: Oregon, Arizona, and Idaho.

I live in the tower all season. I haul water up in 8 gal. (40#) containers. I can cook on the propane stove. Heat is propane. But everything else is run off of solar battery banks. And, yes .. the tower definately sways in the wind. I have been in fire towers during 100 mph wind storms, incredible lightning storms, and blizzards. I'll be 77 this summer .. it keeps me young-ish.
