Does the book explain how the kiler knows the crimes the murderees committed? One or two stories were in the news. Acorn has an excellent adaptation, btw.

he had access to various criminal investigations and underworld rumors.
Don't recall it being spelled out.

The drowned kid
Some versions have a happy ending with the young woman going off with the mercenary.

with Barry Fitzgerald, Walter Huston, C. Aubrey Smith, et al.
It has a happy ending (if that is the right word) and is very atmospheric. And funny in places as well!
