Pima County plans to boost election accuracy with new staff

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - Pima County is taking steps to enhance its election processes, focusing on improving ballot proofing and call center operations. According to a memorandum, these changes aim to boost accuracy and customer service during elections.

Pima County Elections Director Constance Hargrove has proposed utilizing vetted county employees for critical election roles. Employees of grade 11 or higher will serve as ballot proofers, receiving a $300 daily stipend and a $50 training stipend. They will proof between 1,500 and 3,500 ballot styles, working up to five days.

For the Election Day call center, employees will cover the second shift from 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., earning a $150 stipend plus $50 for training. Around seven employees are needed per election, with HR overseeing recruitment and approvals.

Both initiatives require coordination with the Human Resources Department, which helped set pay rates and recruitment criteria. These proposals aim to address past staffing challenges and were shared with county leadership for implementation.
