Garcia-Ruiz takes 6 vote lead over Cardenas-Singh in Imperial County race
Heber postmaster Diahna Garcia-Ruiz has taken a razor-thin lead over El Centro councilwoman Martha Cardenas-Singh in the Imperial County Board of Supervisors District 2 election. But with just six votes separating them, and many more ballots to be counted, the race is still far too close to call.
As of Monday, Garcia-Ruiz had 4,579 votes, or 50.03% and Cardenas-Singh had 4,573 votes, or 49.97%, in a race that was marked early on by accusations of a large attempted bribe and an infusion of anonymous "dark money" to Cardenas-Singh's well-funded campaign.
On Monday, Garcia-Ruiz said in text messages of her narrow lead, "although this is exciting news, I am patiently awaiting the Registrar's full count."
She said she has been buoyed by her supporters, including seniors from her church who "have a full blow Rosary going" and prayer candles that have been lit in homes not just in her hometown of Heber, near the Mexico border, but "in Mexicali, Coachella and LA valleys" where she has relatives.
