Butte County sending 2 separate ballots for June 2 elections

CHICO, Calif. — Voters in Butte County are being asked to pay extra attention this election season as two separate elections will take place on the same day.

The Butte County Clerk-Recorder’s Office sent postcards on Monday notifying residents that ballot packets are on the way. Beginning May 4, voters will receive two separate ballots —one for California’s statewide primary and another for a special vacancy election to fill the congressional seat left open after the death of Congressman Doug LaMalfa.

County Clerk-Recorder and Registrar of Voters Keaton Denlay says having two elections simultaneously is highly unusual. Because they are legally separate contests, each voter will receive two color-coded ballot packets—orange for the special election and purple for the statewide primary.

The difference between the two is significant. The special election ballot will only include the race for the vacant congressional seat, while the statewide primary ballot features a longer list of contests, including local measures, county races, and statewide offices.
