SF Mayor Lurie mum on D8, House races
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie is staying quiet, for now, about whom he is supporting in the race to succeed Congressmember Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) in the U.S. House of Representatives. He also has yet to reveal his preferred candidate in the race to become the next supervisor for the citys LGBTQ Castro district and surrounding neighborhoods.
When asked recently by the Bay Area Reporter if he would be endorsing in either of the contests on the November 3 ballot, Lurie demurred. He said his main focus, for now, is seeing voters pass the local ballot measure he is championing to keep the citys buses and trains running.
Lurie argues the Stronger Muni For All ballot measure is necessary to save the citys public transportation system, which is dealing with a $307 million annual budget shortfall. Without the tiered parcel tax on residential and commercial properties, Muni would need to implement drastic cuts to service.
The mayors political capital has been good news for his allies on the Board of Supervisors who were up for election earlier this month. District 2 Supervisor Stephen Sherrill and District 4 Supervisor Alan Wong, both straight allies appointed to fill vacancies, cruised to victory in their June 2 races to serve out the remainder of their terms through the end of the year.
