CPAC Announces Plan for Clearinghouse for Special Education Complaints

For Connecticut residents, I received this info from this advocacy group, it may be of
help for families battling for services for their children:

Last week, CPAC organized a meeting with special education attorneys and advocates who represent families of children with disabilities. We had a very interesting discussion about the problems facing our families and came up with a number of approaches to help move things in a better direction.

We are going to implement one of those suggestions immediately. CPAC will establish a clearinghouse for information on complains filed against school districts in Connecticut.

Unfortunately, there are situations where the work between family and school staff breaks down. In some of those situations, the family decides to file a complaint with the State Department of Education. Regrettably, little if any information on the results of these complaints are easily found. Parents don't know if other families in their town have experienced the same issues and they don't know if other districts have responded effectively to solve similar issues. We need to address that need.

We invite families, advocates and attorneys to share copies of complaints they have filed and any responses they have received. CPAC will collect and analyze the information and regularly publish our findings on the website and individual information will be kept confidential.

If you have filed a complaint and would like to have the information used to help families in similar situations, we ask you to send copies to problems@cpacinc.org.

We want to thank you for your help and look forward to sharing what we discover.

For more information, or questions about the clearinghouse
contact Executive Director, John Flanders at 1-800-445-2722 or flanders@cpacinc.org.
