March will probably be warmer than normal in D.C., but it could still snow.
We expect a volatile month, with mild weather prevailing but occasional bursts of cold air.
March marks the start of meteorological spring and all of its weather complications. After D.C.s relatively cold and snowy winter, many people are ready for spring, but it seldom arrives gracefully. Although we project that March will be warmer than normal, the weather pattern appears volatile, and some incursions of cold air are likely.
We project that temperatures this month will average 1 to 3 degrees above normal and that rainfall will be near or above the norm. The average March rainfall is 3 inches, and we expect a monthly total between 3 and 4.5 inches.
An average March sees about 2 inches of snow, and we have a chance of that much, but we are forecasting a range of 0 to 2 inches. Theres a very slight chance of snow next weekend although rain is more probable and the possibility of a cold snap later in March could present another window for snow. The last time D.C. received over 2 inches of snow in this month was because of a late-month cold snap in 2018 (4.5 inches!).
