SEE IT: Peoples Convoy files lawsuit against D.C. for blocking access to city
Heather Hamilton - May 3
Members of the Peoples Convoy, a group primarily comprising truckers protesting COVID-19 mandates, filed a lawsuit Monday claiming the Washington, D.C., government violated their First Amendment rights.
Sixteen members of the trucking convoy claimed that D.C.s Metropolitan Police Department set up blockades preventing their access to the city.
"MPD formed the blockades for the sole purpose of preventing American citizens from entering our nations capital to exercise their constitutionally protected right to free speech, the lawsuit states. Of course, such action under color of state law violates Plaintiffs First Amendment rights.
The lawsuit claims that the convoy was turned away from entering D.C. four separate times.

But even worse, MPD;s actions directly and proximately killed two people as their motor vehicle crashed into the blockades. The two victims were trapped inside their vehicle and spent their last moments on fire, burning to death. Indeed, their deaths were entirely avoidable and tragically, foreseeable.

"Dustin Sternbeck, a D.C. police spokesman, said the dump truck and a D.C. police vehicle had been parked at Exit 1C as part of security measures for the 'Peoples Convoy.' The group of truckers and other motorists are staging a demonstration by driving around the Beltway this week, and D.C. police have positioned officers and trucks at various highway entrance and exit ramps in case members of the group try to drive into the District, possibly to divert or block them."

(60,893 posts)The members of the convoy were driving around in broad daylight. I don't know how they hit both a dump truck and a police vehicle.
Thanks again.

Not sure why this accident is related to the truckers' convoy.
